I'm really relieved. My wife just bought two bunches of green bananas and I thought they'd go to waste for sure.

Phew!

ALAMEDA, Calif. — California preacher Howard Camping says his prophecy that the world would end was off by five months because Judgment Day actually will come on Oct. 21.

The independent Christian radio host said Monday the apocalypse will come five months after May 21, the original date he predicted.

My sources tell me that Macho Man approached Jesus with an offer to endorse Slim Jim, but He chose to endorse Jack Links beef jerky instead...so this actually makes perfect sense.

The sad thing is how many weak-minded, gullible people will actually believe this ridiculous garbage.

Here in Brooklyn, I know of a friend of a friend who is actually in seclusion because the world didn't end and he's still here! But again, he is a very emotionally disturbed person. Seriously.

And, of course, the media is partially to blame for giving Howard Crackpot national exposure. This fool is just going to keep on keeping on with his insane drivel until he croaks! (Since he's quite up there in years, I suggest that - for strictly chronological reasons - he's a lot closer to being "raptured" than most of us!)

So, the world didn't end this time? My calculations were off - you've all got a few more months. But it will absolutely, positively end next time! Oh, wait - I blew it again? Don't go away, we're all gonna definitely get raptured the next time! Just a few more months, folks, and then KA-BOOM!

It's like that old question: If a tree falls in a forest and there's no one there to hear it - does it make any sound? Well, for me, Howard Crackpot is that tree in the forest. The press should simply stop covering him. No one there, no noise. Hopefully.

Signor V.

The sad thing about this...many people who were hoping for an end to their world didn't have to "pull the trigger" themselves. Now what are they going to do? Hold out hope for Oct. 21 I guess.

No, what's truly sad is the bad name this guy gives to Christianity and the truth of the Gospel. NORMAL Evangelicals believe in an Apocalypse, but not all believe in a rapture. Among those who do believe in it, there are even various schools of thought as to what point in the Great Tribulation it will occur: Pre-Tribulation (the most popular, and obviously this guy's take), Mid-Trib, and Post-Trib. But even among all that disagreement, all NORMAL Evangelicals will tell you plainly what Scripture says, ""But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone."--Matt. 24:36. [I myself, believe in the Second Coming (that's different from the Rapture) and an Apocalypse, but not in the Rapture; ergo, I believe Mt. 24:36 refers to the Second Coming of Messiah.]

The whole point is not predicting whether there's a Rapture, when it will be, etc.; but rather, whenever the End comes (and I believe it will), BE WATCHFUL and BE READY. This guy's fiasco does nothing but make believers look like mindless morons and cause everyone to make light of a day that will inevitably come (the Apocalypse). Sad. It doesn't offend me personally, because "but for the grace of God go I"; but it makes me sad for the countless who don't believe at all, and, thanks to people like him, never will. frown

I think most of us who are looking at this from a neutral standpoint and try very hard to be critical thinkers can see very clearly that believers have looked like mindless morons since the beginning of faith. All you gotta do is look at history. The church has been shown time and again, that it can't compete with science. It can't compete with facts. Thankfully, due to the internet and all the information we now have at our fingertips, more and more people are starting to sway away from this nonsense. I say this with love, because these believers have entertained me more than Hollywood has and even during some of my darker days, they helped put a smile on my face. So, for that, I thank them very much.

It has been a roller coaster with me, regarding my faith (or lack thereof). On one hand, I absolutely, positively, want to believe that there is a God, a Heaven, a Hell...you know...SOMETHING other than this life. I WANT to believe that...but my scientific mind will not allow it. I've danced back and forth between complete atheism and agnosticism over the past few years.

When I'm feeling agnostic, my beliefs tell me that if there IS a God out there, He isn't some omnipotent, omniscient, omnibenevolent, omnicompetent deity. Omnibenevolence brings up the philosophical "problem with evil." I believe that some evil is necessary in order for people to actually witness good things, as well as commit true acts of courage and kindness, and show compassion. Moral and natural evils MAY BE necessary for good to exist in the world, but what about gratuitous evil? Gratuitous evil can be defined as "unnecessary pain" or "pain for no conceivable reason." Some say that gratuitous evil is impossible to differentiate from regular ol' moral evil. I'd argue that the Holocaust was a gratuitously evil event. Was it REALLY necessary for God to allow 6 million (maybe MORE) Jews to be killed to make a point? To quote the famous philosopher David Hume: "Is He (God) willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then He is impotent. Is He able but not willing? Then He is malevolent. Is He both able and willing? Whence then evil?"
The evidential problem with evil states: 1) If God exists, then there is no gratuitous evil; 2) It is likely that there are instances of gratuitous evil; 3) Therefore, it is likely that no God exists.

That is about as far into the philosophical side as I care to go at the moment. I guess the point I am trying to make is that this isn't something I take lightly. I have come to my own conclusions based off of years of independent research and soul searching. And these are not conclusions that I have come to easily. My lack of belief has been a spiritual tug-of-war, and it has been painful. But I have gotten to a point now where I am comfortable with my beliefs (or lack thereof), and am willing (and able) to back them up if I have to. Always respectfully, of course.

I respect those who believe in God, Heaven, and all that. Religion and spirituality do many good things for many people. I don't respect people like Harold Camping, who seemingly only want to take your money and scare the shit out of everybody. I don't respect the ones that try to shove it down my throat. We have an infestation of Mormons here in Southern California who love to interrupt you while you're eating dinner. Hell, I'll be on campus grabbing a quick bite before my next class, and they'll just plop their pompous asses down right beside me and start preaching. I tell them I don't believe, I'd like to be left alone as I only have 15 minutes before my next class...but they continue. So usually I just tell them to go to Hell, which always gets me a nice reaction. smile

Sorry for the rant. Just wanted to give a little insight into the atheistic/agnostic side of things. grin

That's not a rant my man. You just made an intelligent input here. You're a man with an open mind and that's exactly what we need more of. You're asking all the right questions regarding this matter. Sadly, religion doesn't want us to ask these type of questions. You're just supposed to have blind faith lol.

The phrase "blind faith" is redundant. Faith is believing in something despite the fact that you can't see it or touch it. In order to be faith, it must be blind.

People too often confuse faith and religion. Religion is organized and man-made. Faith comes from your mind, heart and soul. They are completely different things.

X, it's normal to have doubts. If you've read the bible, even Jesus had doubts. Remember Gethsemane? Remember when He asked His Father to take the cup away??

I have no idea if there is a god or not. I think the chances are exceptionally slim. No matter how I look at it, it just doesn't make sense to me. But, I don't claim to know anything. I know as little as you people do. To quote my good friend, Bill Maher, "I preach the gospel of I don't know."

Yeah and I've noticed a few people in here claim to know an awful lot about things. Sadly, the more you talk to them, the more you see how little they know. So, in reality, they know nothing. That's not their biggest problems though. It's the fact they aren't aware of it lol. I know that I know nothing.

Just like Vinnie said, I don't know whether there is a God or not. However, I find it highly unlikely that there is a God. To me, the idea of an omnicompetent Creator is illogical at best. For example, it is impossible to have an ALL KNOWING (omniscient) God if you believe in free will, not to mention that God can't be the creator of knowledge since God would have to KNOW how to create knowledge, and you can't KNOW how to do ANYTHING without KNOWLEDGE. It is impossible to have an ALL GOOD (omnibenevolent) God if gratuitous evil exists. As far as omnipotence (all powerful) goes, there's an old philosophical problem that can pretty much dispel the notion of an all powerful God: Could God create a rock that is too heavy for even HE to lift? If God cannot LIFT this rock, then He is not all-powerful. If God cannot CREATE this rock, then He is not all powerful.

Also, pretty much anything in the Bible can be explained scientifically, and anything that can't be explained scientifically will be one day. Until then, however, most people who are religious use the Gap Theory, meaning that whatever science CAN'T explain, they fill in the gap with "God."

At the end of the day, none of us will REALLY know if there's a God, Heaven, or Hell until we die.

The Bible and science will never agree. Science is constantly changing, "updating" itself; the Bible is unchanging (albeit a "living," timeless Book). But while the existence of God can never be proven NOR disproven, theories in science frequently are either proven or disproven (e.g., "global warming").
As Sicilian Babe, said, faith and religion are two different things. IMHO, it takes more faith to not believe in a God than to believe in Him. But I condemn no one for their views, even atheists. God reaches us when He reaches us, and He reaches us "where we're at."
