It's possible that there is another recording made by Bin Laden before his death:

WASHINGTON - U.S. intelligence officials believe Osama bin Laden made a propaganda recording shortly before his death and expect that tape to surface soon.

It's unclear whether the tape is audio or video, but a U.S. official says that intelligence indicates it's already working its way through al-Qaida's media pipeline. The official said the timing was coincidental and there's no indication he knew U.S. forces were bearing down on him.

A new recording from bin Laden would provide a final word from the beyond grave for a terrorist who taunted the U.S. with recorded propaganda for years. It could also provide fodder to those who insist he is still alive.

JL,

I just saw this picture on the news. It's my understanding that the President and his team could actually watch this go down in real time. eek Except for the guy in uniform, who looks like he's on the computer, EVERYBODY'S face is glued to what is happening. Can you imagine the tension in that room?

I would really love to see the video of the operation they are watching on the picture.

They will probably release it after 30 years or so...

Will the US, UK, and whoever else rule global capitalism stop illegal imperialist wars? Will they stop murdering people including children?

No.

And no.

Obama's a fraud. When he was inaugurated I got told off of SC for linking, tongue-in-cheek, his name via rhyme to "Osama". Well...

LMAO! I was gonna say something like "the USA can only trump the UK's 'love' by their own tragedies or murder", but as it happens, I can't stand anything to do with that wedding, and think its supporters are jerks.

You'll note my same post included my own country - or "the UK", of which I'm a part.

(And it is bigger news, granted. Or at least more important.)

Wouldn't it be great if, when the photos are released, bin Laden's wound is identical to Moe Greene?

It'd be better if bin Laden's wound was identical to Khartoum's.

Speaking of which, Kathryn Bigelow (Oscar-winning director of THE HURT LOCKER) was working on a project about the hunt for Osama and now she's got a new ending.

From the director of POINT BREAK, I'm damn certain the climatic compound raid will be pretty potent.

Larry O'Donnell just played a video of President Bush back in 2002 saying among other things about Bin Ladin:

"He's been marginalized."

"I'm really not that concerned about him."

For all my dislike of Obama's philosophies, policies, and even demeanor, I must tip my hat to him on this whole OBL thing. Granted, I DO think he's trying to take way too much credit, when, in fact, the foundation was laid and walls built long before he took the Presidency. That's the politician in him, I know. But he handled what he was handed quite professionally. Most importantly, he kept it hush-hush so that the mission wasn't jeopardized, lives weren't put in unnecessary danger, and the target wasn't tipped off. That's quite a commentary on the man (especially considering he's a Democrat! Hahaha! Sorry! Couldn't resist! ;-)). Seriously, though, he handled it exactly as it should've been handled, and I do respect him for that (if little else). I know the days are coming (and soon) when all of this will be politicized and used for reelection campaigns, etc., and Obama will gladly grab all the credit when, in fact, he merely stood on the shoulders of those who came before him and he just happened to be the one in office when the wheel came 'round. BUT he did what he did in an admirable way, and I do now have at least some respect for the man (where none existed before now) . I wouldn't reelect him on that basis alone, but I do appreciate and respect what he did. So much could've gone wrong had it been handled differently. Thanks, Mr. Obama (never thought I'd say THAT and mean it!).

Somewhere an Obama campaign ad manager is cutting a commercial for 2012. "it might not have been 3:00 a.m., but here's how Barack Obama decided to handle the world's #1 terrorist."

Capo, I don't understand. You stood at Ground Zero. How could you have stood where so many innocents were senselessly slaughtered and not feel the teeniest, tiniest bit of satisfaction that the man who engineered their deaths has finally been brought down??

As I said earlier, there is no justice. His death can't bring back the dead, or heal the injured. The first responders who now suffer numerous health problems won't begin to breathe with ease. The wounds inflicted on that horrible day can never be healed, but the death of this hate-monger is all there is, it's all we have.

And if it brings any sense of comfort to the families of his victims, then so be it.

TIME has details on the behind-the-scenes of the risky decision:

Quote:
The decision to attack had been made days earlier by the President. He gathered his senior intelligence, military and diplomatic team together in the Situation Room on Thursday afternoon to hear his options. There were already concerns about operational security. At that point, hundreds of people had already been read into the potential whereabouts of bin Laden. Any leak would have ruined the entire mission.

The intelligence professionals said they did not know for sure that bin Laden was in the compound. The case was good, but circumstantial. The likelihood, officials told the President, was between 50% and 80%. No slam dunk. Obama went around the table asking everyone to state their opinion. He quizzed his staff about worst case scenarios–the possibility of civilian casualties, a hostage situation, a diplomatic blow-up with Pakistan, a downed helicopter. He was presented with three options: Wait to gather more intelligence, attack with targeted bombs from the air, or go in on the ground with troops. The room was divided about 50-50, said a person in the room. John Brennan, the President’s senior counter-terrorism adviser, supported a ground strike, as did the operational people, including Leon Panetta at the CIA. Others called for more time. In the end, about half of the senior aides supported a helicopter assault. The other half said either wait, or strike from above.

Obama left the meeting without signaling his intent. He wanted to sleep on it. At about 8:00 a.m. on Friday, just before he boarded a helicopter that would take him to tour tornado damage in Alabama, Obama called his senior aides into the Diplomatic Room. He told them his decision: A helicopter assault.

I want to believe Obama's last words to his senior aides were "Now go and kill this motherfucker".

I did. But I'm still trying to figure out if he was actually serious or sarcastic.

(freudian-slipping "Osama" for "Obama" doesn't help him.)

I like those NeoCons claiming this was all Dubya's doing, that he deserves all the credit. Clearly Obama stood on his shoulders.

Flashback, here's a 2006 Washington Post article on the failure of Dubya's Administration in hunting down Osama.

Quote:
On the videotape obtained by the CIA, bin Laden is seen confidently instructing his party how to dig holes in the ground to lie in undetected at night. A bomb dropped by a U.S. aircraft can be seen exploding in the distance. "We were there last night," bin Laden says without much concern in his voice. He was in or headed toward Pakistan, counterterrorism officials think.

That was December 2001. Only two months later, Bush decided to pull out most of the special operations troops and their CIA counterparts in the paramilitary division that were leading the hunt for bin Laden in Afghanistan to prepare for war in Iraq, said Flynt L. Leverett, then an expert on the Middle East at the National Security Council.

"I was appalled when I learned about it," said Leverett, who has become an outspoken critic of the administration's counterterrorism policy. "I don't know of anyone who thought it was a good idea. It's very likely that bin Laden would be dead or in American custody if we hadn't done that."
