Wow...this is just tragic. frown

Prep star hits game-winning shot for perfect season, falls and dies

By Cameron Smith

Tragedy struck Western Michigan on Thursday night when Fennville (Mich.) High basketball star Wes Leonard hit a game-winning shot in a 57-55, overtime victory over Bridgman (Mich.) High, then collapsed on the court while celebrating the victory and was pronounced dead at a hospital shortly thereafter.

According to the Associated Press, Leonard, who you can see making the game-winning shot above, was celebrating his game-winning layup with the rest of his teammates when he collapsed to the ground. Paramedics tried CPR on the star at the site and in the ambulance, but he was pronounced dead upon reaching nearby Holland Hospital.

The star's death was due to an enlarged heart, Ottawa County medical examiner David A. Smart told ABC News after concluding an autopsy on the player's body on Friday.

"Obviously, in the midst of celebration, I think shocking is exactly the word," Fennville Superintendent Dirk Weeldreyer told The Holland Sentinel about Leonard's collapse.

Making matters even more disorienting for Fennville fans were the events that transpired just before Leonard's death. The junior -- who was also the quarterback of the school's football team last fall -- not only hit the winning shot in the team's final regular-season game, but by doing so he also ensured that the Blackhawks would finish with a perfect, 20-0 record.

"It's tough to take in," Leonard's teammate Shane Bale told The Sentinel. "It's like somebody from your family, you know?"

The team was scheduled to open the district playoffs on Monday, but remained undecided on whether to play the game at all as of Friday evening, with coach Ryan Klingler saying Monday was, "Way, way down the road."

Opposing coaches and their teams were also still trying to come to grips with the teen's passing. Bangor (Mich.) coach Rocky Johnson said that he was completely stunned by the death.

"It's hard to stomach," Johnson told MLive.com. "We are all hurting now.

"My son and Wes played AAU in different programs, but we saw each other all summer, all spring, and he's the kind of kid that I would make sure to say hi to him and he would go out of his way to say hi to me. He always had something good to say, all positives."

Meanwhile, comments in a Tuesday article in The Sentinel made clear just how much Leonard felt like his team was an extended family. When asked about Klingler's decision to make his wife, Becky, the team's assistant coach, Leonard was unequivocal in his support.

"It makes it feel like you're right at home," the junior told The Sentinel.

Now, that family will have to enter the district playoffs without one of its most significant members, if they decide to take part at all. If they bypass the postseason, none would be able to begrudge them a perfect finish to their season.

"That's what makes [Leonard] a little different," Klinger told The Sentinel in the Tuesday article. "He takes care of his body better than probably anybody I've ever coached. Spends a lot of time on his own in the weight room. He's a special kid."

"Growing up my dad was like 'You have a great last name, Galifianakis. Galifianakis...begins with a gal...and ends with a kiss...' I'm like that's great dad, can we get it changed to 'Galifianafuck' please?" -- Zach Galifianakis

This is a painful tragedy that defies understanding. One moment a high school is celebrating the euphoria of an undefeated season and in the blink of an eye it inexplicably turns into the most devastating moment of their lives.

My heart goes out to his family and classmates. They're playing their game on monday and I wish them well.

I saw some really heartless posts about this, from jokes to out and out totally malicious commentary. It makes me wonder what's happened to our society when people are so thrilled with the anonymity of the web that they'll say literally anything, and thus they DO. This was sad no matter how you slice it, and my heart and my prayers are with his family. It sounded like he was a promising lad who had a lot of potential and touched many lives during his short sojourn here. That's more than can be said for these morons who spout off derogatory comments about him. Just because you can say anything doesn't mean you should. mad

"When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies but the pack survives."
Winter is Coming

Now this is the Law of the Jungleā€”as old and as true as the sky; And the wolf that shall keep it may prosper, but the wolf that shall break it must die.
As the creeper that girdles the tree-trunk, the Law runneth forward and back; For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack.

That broke my heart, Lilo, but what an amazing amount of living he crammed into his short life!

Very well said. There's no answers when something like this happens. All you can do is shake your head.
