Trial date set for Bonanno family mobster BascianoA trial date has finally been set for the capital trial of Bonanno crime family mobster Vincent “Vinny Gorgeous” Basciano. Judge Nicholas Garaufis said opening statements for the trial are slated to begin on April 4, 2011. Jury selection for the trial began on Feb 16th and will not finish up until sometime in March. The fed’s are seeking the death penalty against Basciano for his crime including murder of mob associate Randolph Pizzolo and for also writing a possible hit list which included the names of Garaufis, Bonanno turncoats , and a federal prosecutor.
Basciano once held the rank of acting boss in the Bonanno family taking over for boss Joseph Masino after his arrest. Massino has since turned rat and will be in line to testify against his fellow mobster Basciano and even wore a wire recording jail house conversation between the two of them. Basciano is already serving a life sentence for previous murder and racketeering convictions and has been housed in solitary confinement at a federal detention center while he waits to stand trial again.
Judge Garaufis did order that the Manhattan federal jail keep five sets of clothing on hand so Basciano can be properly attired for his trial. By all means Basciano has to keep up with his moniker “Gorgeous”.
