Being that Michael Corleone was "attempting" to go legit, or at least attempting to "appear" to be going legit, would it have made sense for him to return to his original family last name of Andolini?

No.

But it would make sense for him to change the family name to 'Smith'.

That way, Sen. Geary might like him better.

A wise and frugal government, which shall leave men free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned - this is the sum of good government.

I always thought he should change it to Throckmorton.

and contrary to what Mallone said later in the film...Stone brought a gun to whip-fight.

============================================

To the OP, I think if he was trying to reinvent himself on that level, he would have anglicized his last name. Also, until the Senate hearing..I don't think the last name Corleone was particularly infamous to the point where it would hurt his legit business ventures.

I know that Ellis Island screwed up a lot of foreigner's names. I always thought that, if their descendents knew the real family name, they ought to go back to it.

I don't think to them it mattered as long as they were here they could call them whatever they wanted to.

Sure, but what about "today's" generation, for example? If your name was Roth, but it used to be Rothstein, would you change it back to your original family name?

i don't think the book directly said it, but I always thought that safety had something to do with Vito Andolini changing his last name.

He was on the run....and a new "identity" in America was a safety precaution....not unlike Fabrizio....

We're never told just how far the reach of the mafia in Sicily is....but young teen vito andolini in sicily could surely become adult vito corleone in america a virtually undetectable "new person"

People anglicizing their names...shortening them...dropping "ova" "oka"" stein" "berg" etc...is different than what went on with the character in the book/film.
