Phat, I agree it wasn't the greatest, but it's still a mafia flick about a pivotal
Time in their history. Yes it was mis-cast and they changed Maranzano
to Faranzaro, but some of the stuff in there was accurate Sets, costumes
and mood was pretty good

Yes, mobsters is a pretty bad movie, but it's enjoyable. We've probably all seen it. wink

Agreed Sonny Black. A good popcorn movie

What did you guys think about "Deuces Wild"?
With Stephen Dorff I think?
It had some mob elements if I remember correctly

One of my favorites that I return to often is "Honor Thy Father" (1973), made for TV. It's based on Gay Talese's book of the same name, covering Bill Bonanno's devotion to his father, Joe, and the "Bananna War" of the mid-Sixties. It has three big things going for it:
--Terrific cast, headed by Joe Bologna, Brenda Vaccaro, Raf Vallone and Richard Castellano.
--Excellent script by Lewis Carlino, which avoids nearly all the "honor" crap that Bill Bonanno loaded on Talese (and that he fell for).
--Directed by Paul Wendkos, who had lots of experience getting the most out of low-budget made for TV productions.

Excellent!

Bah! Revisionist drivel. The only good thing about that one is Tim Roth's performance as Dutch Schultz.

Has anyone caught the Aussie gangster flick "Animal Kingdom"?

Subtlely horrifying yet compellingly understandable and human. This relatively obscure independant film won numerous AFI awards, and its lead actress Jackie Weaver was nominated for a best actress award at the last Oscars.

A great movie.

I saw it and agree with your description.

Now this is the Law of the Jungle—as old and as true as the sky; And the wolf that shall keep it may prosper, but the wolf that shall break it must die.
As the creeper that girdles the tree-trunk, the Law runneth forward and back; For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack.

"China Girl"

Very corny 1987 update on Romeo and Juliet. But the supporting parts (Richard Panebianco, David Caruso and James Russo) were well acted, and it was directed by Abel Ferrara, who would go on to give us "King of New York."

What I like about it is it's one of the last films to be filmed on location in Little Italy before the gentrification of the '90s.

Here's the preview, but you can also watch the whole thing on Youtube as well.

What about The Brotherhood? I haven't seen it in almost two decades, but it got my attention. I thought its pathos was just made for Douglas's sometimes fatalistic portrayals.
