In my teens, it was golf, ice hockey, and basketball. After that it was all downhill. In my 20's it was raquetball and bowling. In my 30's, it was rollerblading and softball. Now in my 40's, it's golf, cycling, and fantasy sports. wink

Is drinking a sport? whistle

I didn't play team sports in school, but as a kid my folks put me in lessons for ice skating, swimming, tennis, and sailing. I sucked at tennis, but did okay at skating (and later rollerblading), and am a good swimmer.

Over the years I've dabbled in martial arts, mountain biking, hiking, bowling, golf, skiing, and maybe other stuff. And like JL, fantasy sports of course (in which I excel tongue wink )

I studied Italian for 2 semesters. Not once was a "C" pronounced as a "G", and never was a trailing "I" ignored! And I'm from Jersey! tongue lol

As a kid, track and football. Now, weightlifting and jogging.

Geoff, you forgot your excellent marksmanship, especially your ability to hit a moving target directly in the eye with a ball. whistle

I played football/soccer into my early thirties.

In my long lost foggy youth i also played rugby, cricket and ran for the school. I was extremely sporty!

Sports can be split in categories, like competitive and recreational.
Little League baseball then high school wrestling. In my 20s/30s, softball. Recreationally, swimming and diving, gymnastics, fishing, skateboarding, surfing, tried water skiing and cross-country skiing. Diving - could do a one and half with a full twist; inward one and a half; did a few 2 1/2s off the high board (3 meter), various other front, back, reverse and inward things. Too bad our school didn't have a diving team.

Now I jog, bike, golf, swim, body-surf or boogie board....oh yeah, and drink. tongue

I used to play basketball hours a day.

Now I play fantasy sports. Oh and Poker, they show that on ESPN, it counts right?

I'm 50 now, so I'm basically down to golf lol.

Seriously, I still run about 25 miles a week and work out with free weights three times a week. It's the only way to keep the pounds off. Once you get into middle-age, eating right just isn't enough anymore. Not for me, anyway.

When I was a kid, I played all of the usual "American" sports. I was pretty average at all of them. I boxed a bit as a teenager, as well, and I studied Taekwondo extensively from my late teens until I was in my early 30s. Now I just watch old Bruce Lee movies whistle.

I was a good bowler back in the day..... I had learned at Neptune Lanes (looooooong gone) but did most of my bowling at Rainbow Lanes. One of the other local kids who bowled with me was Mark Roth. He ended up owning the lanes for awhile (after he turned pro) but they went out of business some time around 1990.

Roth had a 160 average when we were 12 years old.... I was averaging about 145 then. One day a bunch of us cut high school to go into the City, at the then NEW Garden, to see a bowling show being put on by Andy Varipapa, an old pro who turned to exhibitions. As we were watching, Dave Davis, then one of the leading pros, came over and said "hi" to Mark (who had been in a few pro-ams by that point). We were all impressed!

Roth went on to become the second leading winner (by earnings) on the Tour. I don't know if that title still stands.

I forgot about bowling. I still go a few times a year.

SC, I remember watching Mark Roth very well. During the '70s and '80s it seemed he was on ABC Sports every Saturday. He was a GREAT bowler. I remember his duels with Earl Anthony like they were yesterday. I read last year that he had a stroke.

Here's an article:

Bowling hall-of-famer Mark Roth recovering from recent stroke

The news came out of the blue like a gutter ball in a professional bowling event.

It was a shock Friday to read on pba.com that all-time great and PBA Hall of Fame kegler Mark Roth had suffered a stroke that left him partially paralyzed on his left side.

No one expected that kind of news about the 58-year-old Roth, author of 34 PBA Tour titles and two more on the PBA Senior circuit.

No doubt, Roth, who grew up in Meiers Corners, was my favorite bowler growing up. He dominated the PBA Tour in the late 1970s and 80s, racking up more titles and money in a 10-year span that was second to none.

Yes, there may have been better bowlers around like the great Earl Anthony, but the right-handed Roth was the most feared on the circuit and was widely considered the player who introduced the "power game" to bowling with his cranking style.

Roth was so dominant in his time, the current Fulton, N.Y., resident recently ranked No. 5 on a list of the Professional Bowlers Association's 50 greatest players.

According to pba.com, Roth was admitted to St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse, N.Y., last week his wife Denise said, after feeling ill for several days.

"He's brighter today," she told pba.com. "His (left) leg is showing a little improvement. He told me he's going to walk again and I believe him. He has the willpower to do it."

And if anyone can do it, it will be Roth, whose determination and grit are what made him a huge force on the PBA Tour.

And while the recovery process will be a lengthy one, I, and the rest of Roth's numerous fans, have no doubt that we willl see him back on the PBA Senior circuit in the not too distant future.

Here's hoping you're feeling better, Mark.

Mark Roth is DEADLY sick right now and broke. He was working for FedEx driving trucks to try and survive. He is a class act though.

I wasn't aware of any of that.... I just looked up some stuff online and see he isn't doing too well, just as you noted, DMC. Thanks for the heads-up.

I just wanted to add a good feel good story to this thread. Sorry for all the talk about Mark Roth but this reminds me a lot of SC's story about his neighbor who dug out his car for him.

When Mark Roth was sick they took up a collection to help him out, everyone sent money to HIS FOUNDATION, but they couldn't accept the money for tax purposes. So they sent all the money back and gave the people his address to send it to. Well wouldn't you know, HIS FOUNDATION gave the wrong address for Mark Roth. The guy who received lord knows how many 10's of thousands of dollars was named Mark Roth and could have easily cashed the checks and no one would have known. He mailed everyone their checks back saying that he wasn't "The" Mark Roth and gave everyone the real address.

Ok Mark Roth time over.
