I've only seen the first and original "The Godfather". I haven't seen the sequels, because it took me years just to pick up the first one simply because its before my generation. I have a hard time focusing on movies that are earlier than the 80's. Well, I ended up liking "The Godfather" (the first one), but it took me awhile to catch on and Sh#T. Don Corleone (Brando) talks so "quiet" and "mumbles". I'm just curious what you guyz think is the "best one" ... Am I definately missing something if I don't watch the rest of em?
(Personally, Goodfellas is probably my fave all-time mobster movie ... of The Godfather is a classic - gotta like it!!!)

See part 2. It's on the same scale as the original, I'd say.
Part 3 is pretty good. While the others are a solid 10/10, this ones more of a 7.5/10, regardless, it puts a good ending on the saga. If you have trouble finding any of them to watch, many people upload popular movies to youtube, though I havent checked for the godfather. Also, if you liked goodfellas, watch mean streets.

The virtue of III is the morality lesson it teaches. Michael reaps what he has sown. Compared to many elements of I & II, it's an inferior film, but its pathos far exceed those of its predecessors. For one, the silent scream convulsed me and it expresses all of the regret we all feel over our paths taken and not taken.

All three films deserve a viewing. (Actually, multiple viewings!) Of course, to ask which one is the best film is really asking the unanswerable - like saying "How high is up?" or "Which came first - the chicken or the egg?"

Again, all three films have a lot of merit, and I think you will find them enjoyable.

And, let us not forget The Godfather Saga (the television condensation of the first two films) and the other special versions available.

I think you're going to have many hours of worthwhile viewing.

Best Godfather movie? Prizzi's Honor.

Don't think you'll get the full picture by casually watching GF1 once!
Although the movie is very long, believe it or not, its cut-short and condensed to a degree that affects the flow and causes some jerky jumps (read the novel and you'll know what I mean).
The story is rich with details that the director's genius managed to preserve even with the cutting short of the movie; but you need to look for them, every word and gesture counts.
I fully grasped the movie after the 4th dedicated viewing with no interruptions or distractions. till now I do a "Godfather Weekend" 2 or 3 times a year.

As for which is the best, they are in the same sequence as they come, parts 1, 2, and 3.

Desertwolf, since you're new here (and obviously enjoying) :), you should use the "search" feature to read some of the threads we've had on which scenes from the novel should have been included in the film. Many of the posts speak directly to your point.

I find myself flip flopping between whether I like I or II the best. All in all, I like GF I as a story. Don't get me wrong, I love the flashback scenes in GF II, but it is actually the second half of the 1959 part of the film that I don't like as much. I can't explain why, I just don't enjoy it as much as I.

No, no, no. While II is a classic, GFI surpasses it. Its originality and production quality not to mention the script and acting are hard to match.

I like the combined chronological edits myself. None of the officially released ones is perfect, and I had to assemble my own edit from the various laserdisc and DVD box sets.
