As I was driving into work today, I was listening to Mike and Mike and the last segment I heard before I arrived at work was how there were so many hall-of-famers in the 1971 baseball all-star game. According to M&M, there was 20 players, two managers and one coach in that game that all ended up in the hall of fame (Pete Rose was in the game as well.) My thought was "Wow!"

I didn't get to hear the segment that followed but M&M was going to go through the list of tonight's all star game and see how many potential hall of famers there are in the game. What do you guys think?

Listed below is the list of players from the 1971 game and tonight's game.

IMO, from the AL team: Jeter (I know, you're all surprised), Papelbon, Rivera, Mauer and Youkilis. I might consider adding Longoria, Beckett and Halladay to that list. On the NL side, I only see Santana with HoF potential, but I'm biased as an AL gal.

The whole issue gets a little bit muddied up by the steroid era - I don't see any obvious steroid names but I don't think the last shoe has dropped on the 2003 tests either.

From the NL side, besides Santana, Pujols will probably end up as a first ballot guy.

if he is clean he will be a 1st time inductee...and i think tim lincecum will be in the hall as well...if he continues the way he is performing, and injuries dont make a big impact like other young pitchers i.e kerry wood and mark prior

For body of work across Japan and the U.S., Ichiro is probably a hall-of-famer.

Look at the names of those who hit home runs in that game:

Clemente, Aaron, Bench, F.Robinson, Killebrew, Jackson.

(Reggie Jackson's shot was over 550 feet).

I'd say that's some list!!!

2009 AL

Guaranteed: Mariano Rivera, Ichiri Suzuki (arguably the best player of this decade)
Probably: Derek Jeter*
At this rate: Joe Mauer, Tori Hunter

2009 NL

Guaranteed: Trevor Hoffman
At this rate: Albert Pujols, Prince Fielder, Ryan Howard, Johan Santana.

*=Before some of you knee-jerk YES, consider that Don Mattingly (former AL MVP) and Alan Trammell aren't in the HOF.

I was a little surprised at the crowd's reaction to Stan Musial being introduced. Sure, he got a standing ovation but it was somewhat subdued.

At this moment Jeter, Ichiro and Rivera would be elected from the AL, and although he has a long way to go, I'd bet Pujols would get in if his career were to end today.

Hoffman, the career leader in saves, is a question mark. The Hall has been very selective about closers and points out that Gossage and Sutter would pitch 2 and three innings for saves where the closers today seldom go beyond three outs.

Randy Johnson and Ken Griffey, Jr., John Smoltz (and pretty soon) Pedro Martinez are present players, who are locks for the Hall. A-Rod and Ramirez have to join the group that includes McGwire, Bonds and Sosa. I also expect Jim Thome to be inducted.

There are a lot of young players having fantastic careers, who have to keep doing it for another 7-10 years to join the conversation.
