Just a thought, admittedly I haven't sat down and watched the trilogy now for about 6 months so my memory is a bit rusty nor have I read The Godfather for a while now either but from memory, Coppola (in the films at least) never covers or show anyone getting made (Michael for instance) or becoming a member of the family. Am I right? Excuse me if I have forgotten a scene/moment but I just think it's interesting there's not a moment in the film/s for a ceremony of someone being made?
I know it was 1972 the Godfather came out and that was the same year the Valachi Papers came out.. Was it just that no-one (mainstream) knew about the process until after the Valachi papers came out?

Good point. Of course. I forgot about the McClellan hearings. I just thought that maybe they might have touched on it in one of the Godfather films but couldn't rememeber if they had or not. Thanks for clearing that up.

You're welcome! In real life, Dons' whims--particularly nepotism--causes serious problems. Valachi testified that Joe Bonanno made him. But Bonanno never made his son Salvatore (Bill), who was a college grad and ROTC member. Then Bonanno made Bill his consigliere, which pissed off many soldiers and higher-ups in his family. After the Commission ordered Bonanno to step down in favor of his underboss, Gaspar DiGregorio, a lot of Bonanno soldiers defected to DiGregorio because they resented Bill. Still more defected after Bonanno was "kidnapped" , and they believed he was dead and that Bill would be the permanent boss. The war that ensued wrecked the family. Carmine Persico put his brothers and son in high places with the same result.
