Story
My heart goes out to that family in Texas. The confirmed case here in Ohio is in Elyria. I lived in Elyria till I got married.
The school where the 9 year old boy goes to has been closed since Monday. I went to Ely Elementary.

Just heard this on the radio. I heard that the boy was brought from Mexico to Texas, though. That may have made a difference in his recovery.

We have two suspected cases where I live, but as of this morning they were unconfirmed. I bought 5 pocket hand sanitizers last night for my family, giving in to the scare.

There were over 150 deaths in Mexico prior to this.

It's amazing how this is spreading worldwide. It really goes to prove we're all in one BIG community here on earth.

I had to go to my pharmacy today to get a prescription filled. I always wait for that (generally about 15 minutes) so I browse the store to kill the time. I know where most of their items are shown and I noticed that all the facemasks were sold out. Is this the same mentality as people hording up food basics just before a big snowstorm hits OR is this a real panic that is starting?

They were bought by those yuppies, who bought up all the power generators before Y2K.

Here is a linky that keeps track of all references to the Swine Flu.

Keep in mind that the typical flu season results in over 20,000 to 40,000 deaths in the US every year. If this flu kills 5 people in the US, there will be 24/7 "fevered" news coverage, bold headlines, and mass panic!

i see this as another flu...i mean yes this can be deadly to young children, elderly, and those who are really sick. all i can say is if a 20 something year old who is fit dies of this then i might worry...other wise this is nothing to worry about. i do feel bad for the infant who died in the u.s.

True story, just happened yesterday at my school. A girl came to the health office and told the nurse she threw up, felt sick to her stomach. To top it off, she went on to tell the nurse her family had just gotten back from Mexico over the weekend, visiting relatives. I don't remember the other symptoms but the student was pretty much describing the swine flu. eek

The nurse naturally concerned, called the district office, risk management department to find out what to do in case this girl has been exposed to the swine flu. She took the girl's temperature and it was only slightly elevated. The nurse put a face mask over her mouth (she was a little freaked out).
She contacted the girl's mother. Bottom line, the girl lied. She said she wanted to get out of class AND that she was not in Mexico the weekend. Boy did that make the Assistant Principal (and all of us really) angry. She got suspended for two days. I don't know what she was thinking. You'd think anyone would know it's not something to joke about.

My family all thinks I am getting over the Swine Flu. lol I don't think so though, but I did get the worst flu of my life and it turned into pneumonia and I had to miss two weeks of work. I still feel like crap too. I wish I would have heard about this sooner so I could have had the doctor test for it. I might have been the guy on the news reported as being the first in the area to have swine flu, wooohoo! tongue

You missed your shot at fame and fortune, Blib!

Michael Crichton floated a theory that the media, spurred on by certain forces, likes to keep us in a "State of Fear", which was also the title of the book. Global warming, stranger abductions of children, murder, etc., are all examples he cited about the media's distortion of facts to keep us in a perpetual "state of fear". He mentioned in the book (and I wish I had it here to give exact numbers) that the average newscast has upped the use of words like "crisis" and "catastrophe" exponentially over the last several years. And it's all to create these panic situations, such as this one.

I'm not trying to minimize the deaths that this illness has caused, but influenza causes tens of thousands of deaths (mostly in cases like Blib's, where you get complications, I would suspect), yet a few dozen confirmed cases in the entire country, and stores are selling out of hand sanitizer and face masks! And, yes, I bought hand sanitizer the other night! I am a lemming.

Actually, there is a single case of "A Flu" in Argentina, there were other suspicious cases but they were dismissed.
