They are related. I had always assumed they were father and son but now that I think about it, that can't really work out. If you figure Genco was born in about 1875/1880, somewhere in there, he'd be about 70-75 when he dies in the deleted scene in GFI right after Connie's wedding, which is 1945. If he was born in 1875/1880, his son was probably born around 1900/1905, grandson around 1925/1930, and great grandson around 1950/1955. GFIII begins in 1979, and considering the character looks about 30-35 years old, give or take a few years, I'm assuming he is Genco's great grandson, born around 1940/1945.
I just took a look back at the GFIII script to see if there was some sort of background info provided on him as they introduced his character, but theres none.
Thats my best guess.
I dream in widescreen.

I believe he was supposed to be Genco's grandson.

A little too young to be Genco's son, don't you think?
Maybe we should bring that to Lebo's Attention.
Since Vito and Genco were roughly the same age, and Genco died in 1945 (with his at-least-teen-aged-daughters at his bedside), it's rather far-fetched to think that he had a son who was no more than 5 or 6 at the same time.
Genco & Vito, roughly the same age (Genco a bit older, perhaps). Their children, (Michael & Genco's daughters) roughly the same age (The daughters a bit older, perhaps). Their grandchildren, (Anthony & Dominick Abbandando) roughly the same age (Dominick a bit older, perhaps).
I don't see how he could have been anything but Genco's grandson.
In GF III, Michael would have been about 55 years old. How could Dominick Abbandando been some 20 years younger, given that Dom's father was probably older thatn Michael's father.
Not impossible, but certainly difficult.

Grandson, not "godson" But yeah. There are many inconsistencies in the timeline of all three films, and how the jibe with the timeline of the book, so a lot of this is guesswork and speculation. SC is really the timeline expert here.

I wouldn't say its far fetched but for argument's sake lets knock off five years from that scenario. That means Dominick would have been born around 1935, making him 45 at the beginning of Part III. I'd say thats in the ballpark. FWIW - The actors, in real life, Al Pacino and Don Novello are less than three years apart in age. Novello, in real life, would have been 47 when the movie was made.
