Was it Licoln who wrote up the emancipation proclamation? Or was he just the first to free the slaves?

Right. Presidents' Day is a federal holiday falling on the third Monday of February. This was based on George Washington's birthday of Feb. 22. I think it has been subsequently used by many states to bserve all presidents.

I always thought that Presidents' Day was designated as such because it was halfway through Lincoln's and Washington's birthdays.

I remember as a kid when both were separate holidays.

A little off topic - I used to collect coins as a kid. I had LOTS of 1909 pennies (the first year that Lincoln appeared on them in observance of his centennial birthday). Now, you never see anything like that... it's very rare to see even the "wheat" penny anymore.

The '43 pennies were actually made out of steel ... copper was in short demand due to the war.

Just a tidbit I heard yesterday on NPR. Did you know that Lincoln was one of our least religious Presidents? He was not affliated with any religion they said, and seldom went to church. Interesting no? What if we had a non religious president today? eek

Also, they said that the Ford Theater (where Lincoln was assassinated) was not used for a number of years (10 I think)after Abe was killed.

As far as the holiday, I get tomorrow off and Monday (Lincoln and President's day) The advantage of working for a school. grin

President Lincoln invited General Grant to attend the performance with him. Had he attended with Lincoln he would have been escorted by several bodyguards. However, Mrs. Lincoln was known to be quite an unpleasant person and had aliented Mrs. Grant. Thus, the General declined the invitation.

also too lincoln dismissed his own bodyguard...he even said "good bye" to him which was unusual since he normally would say "good night" to him. most likely he knew he was going to die soon, and welcomed it.
