According to Sal Paolantonio...

My Response:

Longneck225 (1/20/2009 at 5:27 PM)

Can I get a job at ESPN? I can write articles about how horrible a guy who completes 65% of his passes in a monsoon didn't deserve to win the game. Of course, I'd need to take some mind altering drugs beforehand, but I could do it.

Sal was right about 1 thing, Rhodes should have been MVP of the game.

Elway, Len Dawson, and Namath had the same TD-INT ratio and also won MVPs? Did any of them play in the rain? You write in facts to try to prove your point but to do so without any context is misleading and biased.

XLI was an exciting Super Bowl to watch. You had the rain, the first kickoff returned for a TD, and a close game with turnovers for most of the game. There were plenty of Super Bowls worse than this. XL comes to mind.

Long as I remember The rain been coming down.
Clouds of Mystery pouring Confusion on the ground.
Good men through the ages, Trying to find the sun;
And I wonder, Still I wonder, Who'll stop the rain.

What's his problem? Who cares Sal? I'm just happy Tonny and Peyton won it. I'm not losing sleep if it wasn't pretty. They won! That's the only important thing in my mind!

I swear, some of these guys just write things to pass time or fill space by their name.

XLI was a snoozefest, and yes, it was played in the rain, but both teamswere sloppy. Grossman had the most pathetic performance, and it was unbelievable that the game was still close in the second half.

I think the rain & weather made that game exciting. The opening kickoff was returned for a TD and the game was still close until nearly the end of the 3rd quarter.

The worst Super Bowl, IMO, was the 55-10 drubbing SF gave to Denver in 1989. Followed by the Bears dominance over NE in 1986.

That said, I find this year's Super Bowl unwatchable. For me, the 2008 NFL season is over. While many people will always tune into the Super Bowl, but this is about as unattractive of a matchup as the game has ever had unless one is rooting for his/her team. I refuse to watch.

Any Super Bowl is a great one when your team wins. It's all perspective. grin

I wish a Super Bowl would go to overtime. Last year was a possibility, as was the Tenn-St. Louis game and the Denver-GB games. I think that would be the ultimate (provided the score was not 0-0 headed into overtime tongue ).

I have a football that was used in that game. It was apparently used during a set of downs in the second quarter.

Yes, that was a blowout as were most of the SBs from around 1983-1990.

The absolute worst SB for me was SF/SD.

I understand that, I felt that way about the playoffs this year after the Colts loss. I didn't really have a team to root for anymore but I am too big of a football fan to miss any of the games. I'll be watching the Super Bowl, as always.

While it was a blow out, it was entertaining:
The Fridge carried one in for a TD;
McMahon, barred from wearing a Nike headband, kept changing them, and wore one that said, "Rozelle."
Richard Dent having a field day on Patriot QBs.

In truth, the Patriots were the darkest horse to reaqch a Super Bowl that year. Their win over the Dolphins was one of the greatest playoff upsets of all time.

By the way, New England scored the first three points of that game, and then gave up 46 unanswered points.

To change the subject a little, one of the most overlooked Super Bowls of recent memory was NE vs. Carolina. Jake DelHomme's performance in the first half was the worst half of any SB QB, but his second half performanc was arguably one of the two best. I'd have to say that the best quarter ever played by a QB in the SB was Doug Williams in the second quarter against the Broncos in XXII.

It's nice to see that I'm not alone on this. I also refuse to watch this years super bowl, and that is a first for me. I had planned on getting a hotel room in Omaha and then going to the local Hooters and watching it there getting drunk in the process.

I hate Pittsburgh always have and I'm not a real big fan of Arizona never have been, even when they were in St. Louis. I'll probably watch until each team scores a touchdown(hopefully) then that way the the Dallas Cowboys of super bowl 6 will still be the only team to never allow their opponent a TD.

In a way I'll be rooting for Arizona cause I do not want to see Pittsburgh win their 6th super bowl, cause if that happens then I can see it now the media will never shut up about Pittsburgh being the only team to win 6 super bowls.

That's funny: a Cowboy fan complaining about another team getting some media attention for something as trivial as possibly winning 6 Super Bowls.

The rest of us are sick of the saturation of sports media devoted to:

Jerry Jones is mad
Tony loves Jessica
T.O. hates Tony
T.O. loves T.O.
Wade Phillips' future
Pacman's past.

Seems to me that Dallas gets a lot of buzz for a team that can't find its way to the playoffs. wink

I tip my hat to the Steelers if they win, particularly with the schedule they had this year. They played who was there in the playoffs, but they caught a huge break with NE not making the playoffs and the Colts tanking in the Wild Card round. I think either team would have been a greater test than any team the Steelers actually faced.

I have to agree with Klydon about the Cowboys. I have never seen a QB so hyped for such an extended period of time who has done nothing in the playoffs. The Cowboys will never be great with Jerry Jones at the helm. Their 90s run was all about Jimmy Johnson and nothing to do with Jones. Until he realizes that simple fact, he will continue spinning his wheels.

To add to Klydon's list, here are the NFL stories/coverage that I am tired of:

The drama with Brett Favre
The drama with Donovan McNabb and his future in Philly
Any story dealing with Al Davis
The Plaxico Burress story

Sadly, now that the offseason is almost upon us, we'll be seeing more on the police blotter with some of the malcontents of the league.

AMEN! I am tired of the NFL period. The games take too long to play, there are way too many commercials, the officials are terrible, the players for the most part are prima donnas, and the announcers are always in the tank for big market teams while they disturb anyone trying to watch the game with inane and trite chit chat that is predictable and boring.

Which brings me to another point. Whats the big deal about "Super Bowl Parties?" If you go to one, its amazing how few people are actually watching the game. ts just an excuse to drink and eat guacamole.

I say play the championship game the week after the NFC and AFC champions are crowned, and play it in the home stadium of one of the winning teams. It could be played in AFC or NFC cities in alternating years.

I live in the Tampa area, and I can tell you first hand that no
one gives a damn about the game being here. It is so bad that they are running local ads telling people to get excited about the game and to be friendly to everyone wo is coming to town to see it. Yeah, like Arizona is bringing throngs of fans.

"Io sono stanco, sono imbigliato, and I wan't everyone here to know, there ain't gonna be no trouble from me..Don Corleone..Cicc' a port!"

Aren't most of the fans there to see the halftime show? Bruuuuuuuuuuuce.

I couldn't agree more with your synopsis dt. Professional sport has crossed far over into the world of big business and entertainment. As a sport it has lost it's appeal to me. I turn on games for the entertainment, which is minimal. I think I watched one whole game this year; Giants-Eagles playoff game.

FOX is the worst network for extraneous grafics and computer generated hype. Please lose that transformer guy. And do we have to analyze every play with slo-mo from 20 cameras. Enough.

To be honest, if Bruce was not the halftime show, I would not even be turning on Fox that night. Even so, at most he'll only perform 3 songs. So they'll have me viewing for about 15 minutes maximum. Steve Van Zandt said that they have been offered the halftime show for about the last 25 years and finally capitulated this year.

Those stories are far more tiresome than the ones I mentioned.

On a positive note we'll soon get the names of the Hall of Fame Class of 2009.

Does anyone know what three songs Springsteen will play. I'm thinking that Born to Run has to be one of them.

I do not know if the songlist will be released. I, too, believe one has to be "Born to Run." I would bet a 2nd will be the title song upcoming album " Working on a Dream ." I would not be surprised if the third is "Glory Days" or "The Rising." I think the choices will be uptempo, but not overly long songs.
