I don't suppose we've had a thread for this before? I was thinking about it the other day when "Foxy Lady" came up in the music playlist I had on...
What are some songs that you always associate with something else - maybe from a movie or a TV commercial? This happens a lot for me when I'm introduced to the song through that other source first. Or maybe a song just reminds you of certain people or places - some music for me reminds me of a particular time in my life, just because I listened to it a lot at the time.
So, what do you think of when you hear certain songs?
Foxy Lady/Jimi Hendrix - Wayne's World
I'm a big Jimi Hendrix fan now, but I watched Wayne's World all the time when I was younger, and it's difficult for me to listen to it without thinking of Garth doing this...good or bad, I don't know!
Bohemian Rhapsody/Queen - Wayne's World
The head-banging part always gives me the mental image of Wayne and his friends. And I love when Garth tries to sing along and isn't getting any of the words right.
Rock and Roll/Led Zeppelin - Cadillac
It seems like this song is used in several things, but I think I know it from the Cadillac commercials. Since my Zep obsession began, however, I've listened to it enough so that I don't think of commercials anymore!
Sing, Sing, Sing/Benny Goodman - Chips Ahoy I can't find a clip of the commercial, but this song was used for the Chips Ahoy ads - when I first got into jazz, it was the "Chips Ahoy song" to me, until I found out the title.
Scar Tissue/Red Hot Chili Peppers When I was in 5th grade, we had the coolest math teacher - he was really funny and nice, let us play games when we had free time at the end of class, and would let us listen to the radio sometimes. I think this song had just come out that year because it was on the radio all the time...I never knew the title or artist, but loved hearing it and for some reason always remembered it. I finally found out what it was called when I heard it recently and asked someone the name, and it brought back a flood of memories from that fun class and school year.
Gina, we just drove down to Florida (never again - a 1300 mile road trip is about 1255 miles too long for me) and my daughter was driving down I95 playing a CD that Mr. Babe had burned. Sure enough, Bohemian Rhapsody came on and we ALL did the Wayne's World thing.
There is one song that has a haunting association for me that goes back to my childhood, only I've never quite been able to identify the association. The song is Badfinger's Day After Day.
I was in college or law school when I first noticed that this song would trigger a reaction and stirred a buried memory in me that went back to when I was 7, 8 or 9, but I could never grasp it. Nevertheless, I always liked the song, but it has some disturbing undercurrents for me.
About 15 years ago, I noticed that the song gave me an image of being on my back porch as a youthIt's late afternoon in the late summer or early fall because the late afternoon sun was shining on the porch, filtered by the rustling leaves from our old maple tree, which is still standing. I think it was a Friday afternoon, and the song was playing on the radio, which was in the kitchen, which was next to the porch.
Anyway, I know there's something unpleasant that I can't quite remember. I don't think it's too bad though because my childhood was pretty happy. Someone once suggested that I see a hypnotist to recover the rest of the memory, but I may nail it down on my own some day.
That song aside, there are some songs that remind me of old girlfriends.

Perfect for driving out of downtown Chicago at 5am.
Long as I remember The rain been coming down. Clouds of Mystery pouring Confusion on the ground. Good men through the ages, Trying to find the sun; And I wonder, Still I wonder, Who'll stop the rain.

Great song, but I first heard it on my depressing drive home from my last day at my counseling job. Like I wasn't sad enough, I had to hear this! And for a long time I had to turn it off when it came on. So yeah... this one brings me right back there.
I studied Italian for 2 semesters. Not once was a "C" pronounced as a "G", and never was a trailing "I" ignored! And I'm from Jersey! lol
Whaddaya want me to do? Whack a guy? Off a guy? Whack off a guy?--Peter Griffin
SB, hopefully you enjoyed the rest of Mr. Babe's songs as much as Bohemian Rhapsody? Otherwise that'd make the 1300 mile trip seem even longer, right?!
I love to stubbornly play the same CDs over and over again in our van, and one of my favorites is Ray Charles' Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music - even many cycles through, that one doesn't get old for me.
Kly, I think I know just what you mean about the way some songs trigger certain reactions - isn't that weird? I haven't had such specific memories come back as you have with this one, but every so often a song will give me a feeling that I just can't pin down, but yet it's so strong at the same time. It seems to be the same as with dreams to me, where there's definitely an underlying connection, but it's as though it's meant to be vague and not fully understood.
Another one for me is Twist and Shout - I almost always think of Ferris and that classic parade scene:
