Gotta go with Vito. He was the perfect Don and leader, balanced and shrewd, where Michael was too rutheless and unforgiving.

Vito put the family on top, Michael kept them there, and reached further heights, and Vincent is never seen in action as a Don.

Mike, though I have a sentimental weakness for the Old Man. tongue

Hey, how's it going?

Though I voted for Vito, I think that's what made Michael a great leader. Advisory from his father along with his ruthless personality. I think that's the way any Don should rule. There are too many people who are willing to stab you in the back. Some of the strongest men are the ones who do not hesitate when giving business orders.

Yes that's true, but it's also true Vito was able to obtain the same results without needing to show such a ruthless and coldhearted attitude.
I mean, remember what Micheal says to Don Tommasino in GFIII: "Why you were so loved and I was so feared"?
I think the same question could apply to his father. Vito was highly respected as a Don, but he was also loved by the people close to him. The famous charm to "make a no sounds as a yes", that I think it's fundamental for a leader - yes, even a crime leader. wink
Of course Michael was respected too, but mainly just out of fear.

I honestly think Michael TRIED to be like his father, but never succeeded.

He was in the end just trying to run away from the whole mafia deal. Being legitimate was also a hard case, Michael didn't know how to handle traitors either.

Vito was the lecturer of Don's. They should all go to his grave and ask how to be a true boss.

Vito by far.

The worst Don was Vincent, who botched his first job when his "security" plans at the opera house fell apart.

Vito easily...remember, Michael was hardly the Don his father was...he moved to Vegas and got involved with the Casino business, Cuba, he wasn't involved with organized crime in the "Five Families" sense

Michael was bigger and more ambitious than Vito, but Vito was more focused on attaining security and primacy in a world he defined. "I don't apologize for my life," said Vito, while Michael never stopped seeking "legitimacy," and never got it. Vito's last words were "Life is so beautiful," while Michael died, embittered, attended only by a little dog.

The best Don? I think it's a toss-up between Don Ho and Don Ameche.

Don Gato. He came back from the dead... grin

"When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies but the pack survives."
Winter is Coming

Now this is the Law of the Jungle—as old and as true as the sky; And the wolf that shall keep it may prosper, but the wolf that shall break it must die.
As the creeper that girdles the tree-trunk, the Law runneth forward and back; For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack.
