No Columbus holiday here.

What did he do exactly? He wasn't the first European to cross the Atlantic by boat. He didn't "discover" anything. There were already civilizations here. When he got here he didnt know where he was. And his "discovery" set off the Spanish atrcities of the following century. Its time to retire Chris.
If this offends Italian Americans, I am all for starting a Meiucci holiday. After all he DID invent the telephone.

Columbus and 90 crewmen boarded the three ships that were to make the first voyage to the New World, the Niña, Pinta, and the flagship, Santa Maria. On October 12, 1492, Columbus first saw the islands of the new world, landing in the Bahamas. Later in the month, he would sail to Cuba, and to Hispaniola (now Haiti). He thought he had reached the East Indies, the islands off Southeast Asia.

Have a easy fast... oops, wrong holiday... Happy Columbus Day.

BTW... DT, it is Meucci

He - (Simón Bolívar) - was shaken by the overwhelming revelation that the headlong race between his misfortunes and his dreams was at that moment reaching the finishing line. The rest was darkness. "Damn it," He sighed. "How will I ever get out of this labyrinth!"

So what’s the labyrinth?

That’s the mystery isn’t it? Is the labyrinth living or dying? Which is he trying to escape - the world, or, the end of it?

If nobody went there before, how did he know that the place existed in the first place, for him to go on a search? Sorry if this is a stupid question blush

Yeah, and he confirmed that the world wasn't flat. I think the day is in recognition of the spirit of discovery. The spirit that led to the "discovery" of the New World. Sure many atrocities followed, but atrocities have plagued humankind all over the world and still do today. To quote our favorite movie, "if history has taught us anything"......people kill people for stupid reasons. So Christopher, my hats off to you for having the balls to see if there really was something else out there besides water.

Yes, he did. He was in search of a water route to India which was along the silk road that eventually led to China and of which even the Romans were aware.

I believe Leif Erickson would dispute this.

Leif just never got the press coverage that Chris got. His story was not reader friendly. He had that leather boat and it didn't have a name. He didn't have a Queen finance his trip. In today's world he would be a skate-boarder competing in the X-treme games. Cool, not mainstream.

Man, down here we celebrate Australia day. I don't. We're basically celebrating the day the English came and murdered, raped and pillaged the Indigenous Australians.

Pfffft..Go figure.
