Here's a real story about the Russian Mafia in America that you won't get from you-know-who:  Every citizen of the former Soviet Union had to carry an internal passport that stated their republic of birth--i.e., Ukraine, Kazakhstan, etc. It was also the world capital of anti-Semitism, and so Jewish Soviet citizens had to carry a passport that said, "Jew," rather than republic of origin. The US Congress passed the Jackson/Vanik Act in 1974, which linked American trade with Russia to Russia's willingness to let Jews immigrate to Israel or the US. The USSR was highly corrupt, and underworld figures created a thriving industry in counterfeit government documents. So the gangsters began cranking out phony internal passports stamped, "JEW" so they could get out of Russia and set up shop in America and Israel, posing as "Jewish refugees." That's how "Russian Mafia" became synonymous with "Jewish Mafia" in modern America and Israel. Now for the punchline: The biggest Russian Mafia guy in America was Marat Balagula. He got the Balagula name from a corruption of the Hebrew phrase, b'aal agulah, which means "Master of the Wheel"--a carter, which was a respectable profession in Biblical times. But in 19th and 20th century Yiddish, b'aal agulah became balagula, by which Jews meant "truck driver," or more figuratively, any uncouth, thuggish person. Jewish gangsters were commonly referred to as balagulas. Marat wasn't Jewish. But when he ordered his counterfeit passport, he took as his name the Yiddish colloquilalism for gangster just to show what kind of guy he was.
