BBC radio have had a show running for the last 60 odd years called Desert Island discs,it has become a real British institution.Loads of stars have been on.

The gist is you are theoretically stranded on a desert island and allowed to take your favourite 8 songs, one object that is not allowed to be useful(ie. not anything that requires electricity or modern technology) and your favourite all time book (you are also given a Bible and the complete works of shakespeare)

My 8 songs?

The Boys of Summer - Don Henley

Thunder Road - Bruce Springsteen

Jack & Diane - John Mellencamp

Teenage Kicks - The Undertones

Tommy Gun - The Clash

Tush - ZZ Top

Hammer to Fall - Queen

Freebird - Lynyrd Skynyrd (air guitaring to the solo would take up at least 3 hours of the day)

Un-useful object?

A football (soccer ball). Once it went a bit flat i could talk to it like tom Hanks in Castaway smile

Book?

To Kill a Mockingbird!

How are you supposed to play the songs? lol

Radio stations do the same here, but they really mean discs (CDs) not just songs wink I'd have to think about it when I get some time...

I would definitely want to play the songs. I know that this flouts the rules, but I will take Beethoven's symphonies and play them as loud as possible. I don't want to be reading books in desert.

I'll give it a shot.

8 songs:

1. Born to Run - Springsteen
2. Livin Thing - ELO
3. Money for Nothing - Dire Straits
4. Sunshine of My Life - Stevie Wonder
5. Carefree Highway/Sundown/If you Could Read my Mind - Gordon Lightfoot (one of those three)
6. God Only Knows - Beach Boys
7. Sweet Child o' Mine - Guns N Roses
8. While My Guitar Gently Weeps - Beatles

Regardless of the songs I select, I bet I'll be wishing for 8 different ones after a month.

Non-useful item:

Hmmm. Either a photo album or a big book of crossword puzzles. But because the crossword puzzle book wouldn't be much fun without a pen, I'll go with the family photo album.

Book:

Ulysses - James Joyce. I'm due to read it again. I haven't read it 23 years, and the desert island will give me the time to read it deeply.

Eight songs... That's fucking hard. I'll try it with eight albums, as Geoff suggested.

Eight Albums:
1.) Strawberry Jam - Animal Collective
2.) Double Nickels on the Dime - Minutemen
3.) Kid A - Radiohead
4.) Band of Gypsy's - Jimi Hendrix
5.) ( ) - Sigur Rós
6.) Zen Arcade - Hüsker Dü
7.) The Velvet Underground & Nico - The Velvet Underground
8.) Milo Goes to College - The Descendents

Non-useful Item:
A bass guitar. I don't need electricity or amplification to rock out. Although, I see some problems arising if I were to break a string.

Book:
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson. I've probably read it about 10+ times by now. Never gets old, always makes me laugh.

8 albums? Jeez.

Alright, no order and no best/favorites type ranking.

Marquee Moon - Television
Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) - Wu-Tang Clan
Astral Weeks - Van Morrison
Let's Get It On - Marvin Gaye
Double Nickels on the Dime - Minutemen
All Things Must Pass - George Harrison
Born to Run - Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band
In Rainbows - Radiohead

I'm so indecisive that definitely will change in like an hour.

Useless item - acoustic guitar

Book - "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" - William L. Shirer

Hey, how's it going?

The first eight musical tracks that came to mind (if that counts for anything) are:

"Can It Be All So Simple" - The Wu-Tang Clan
"Get Together" - Earl Brown
"I Knew These People" - Ry Cooder (w/ Harry Dean Stanton voice-over)
"To Build a Home (live at The Royal Albert Hall)" - The Cinematic Orchestra
"Fratres for Cello and Piano" - Arvo Pärt
"Vorspiel (Das Reingold)" - Richard Wagner
"13 Angels Stand Guard Round the Side of Your Bed" - A Silver Mt. Zion
"Pyramid Song" - Radiohead

My item would be a notepad and pen; my book would be The Magus by John Fowles.

The book is easy - Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. As for the songs, how would I pick just 8? And is it albums or songs??

"Discs", to me, means discs... so... albums tongue wink

In no particular order, but trying to maximize listening time...

1. Elton John - early Greatest Hits
2. Billy Joel - early Greatest Hits
3. Rush - first or second double live album
4. Simon & Garfunkel - Greatest Hits
5. Weezer - Blue Album (2-CD Deluxe Edition)
6. Hank Williams, Sr. - Greatest Hits
7. Any 80's Pop/Cheese-Metal Compilation
8. Mozart - any decent compilation, incl. Requiem

Useless Item: long_lost_corleone lol wink

Book: The Godfather - cuz I've only read it once ( eek blush ) and could read it a few dozen more times to (try and) catch up to Turnbull's knowledge! lol

Edit: Damn! I need Doo-Wop in there! (Mob Hits' 2-CD version would work... but what do I replace? Sorry, Weezer... first loves overpower ohwell )

Edit 2: OMG, no Beatles?? And I need some Replacements! And an old REM album, and Psychedelic Furs, and Husker Du does rawk... Bon Jovi! ....and....... This is WAY too hard! How 'bout Top 20? or 50? grin

This is a tough one.

Eight Songs.

American Trilogy- Elvis
Kentucky Rain- Elvis
A Day In The Life- Beatles
Champange Supernova- Oasis
Supersonic- Oasis
Paint It Black- Rolling Stones
Cocaine Blue- Johnny Cash
What’d I Say- Ray Charles

Book- I only normally four types of book- Mafia, Beatles, Elvis and Football

I go with a statistical(sp) book on the "History of Football".

Useless Item- Probley a football.

Book: ARRRRRRRGH how can I only pick 1? I'd probably have to concur with LLC's choice of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by HST. The one with extra stories in the back. The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved, etc.

Long as I remember The rain been coming down.
Clouds of Mystery pouring Confusion on the ground.

I agree. Greatest Beatles cover since Sinatra covered "Something" in the late 1970's.

Wainwright is almost other worldly in that performance.
