Hey Lilo, have you seen ESPN's "The Fab Five"? I loved it, but they did NOT start the baggy shorts trend in Basketball. The Flyin ILLINI did! tongue

Nope. All the local radio shows were talking about it the Friday before it came on and of course the week afterwards but I missed it. mad

It was good one. Webber of course didn't participate but folks like Ice Cube and your boy Albom did. Reminded me how culturally significant those kids were outside of the sports rhelm--i.e. The L.A Rodney King riots which took place during the height of the Five.

I'm sure it will be on DVD eventually. Maybe it is available on demand. I will check this evening. I heard some of Albom's comments about it on his radio show.

Another local radio show host (one that used to work with Albom) interviewed Billy Packer about the Fab 5.

The results were what you might expect. The Fab 5 comments start around 11:45.

Yeah, even Bill Walton hated on their game back in the day.

But Webber was so cool, dude. A frickin rock star, and the only real great on the team. His game was so unique, I wish he'd won a title with the Kings.

But the most interesting aspect of the whole thing was Jalen Rose, who in my mind, is now one of the best NBA analysts on TV. No wonder he was such a spokesman then for the immense change the Five represented.

IIRC correctly wasn't that Kings-Lakers game five the game that the Lakers shot like 23-25 free throws in the third quarter? panic

It's hard to get over that but that was Webber's best chance to go forward. I like Webber a lot but so it goes. By the time he got to Detroit his knees were pretty shot but (that time-out aside) I always thought he was a pretty smart basketball player.

I was watching those two Kings-Lakers series as a completely impartial observer and I'd never in my life seen such a blatant attempt on the refs part to fix a result. It was then that I knew sometimes sports are completely rigged, which is why I rarely watch these days. Observe:

That midrange teardrop jump shot is harder to make than one might think-especially going at full speed. I thought he should have taken it all the way to the rim or kicked it out for the three. So it goes. Hopefully we'll be back next year and maybe even have a big forward or God forbid a CENTER or two..

That was the ugliest NCAA Final I've ever seen. But I'll say this: Calhoun deserves to be in the all-time pantheon of coaches. He's that good.

I've never understood the virtue that accrues to the NFL's lockout of players. What difference does it make to CBA negotiations if the players can or cannot use NFL facilities? As an owner, I know that eventually a CBA will emerge and I would want my players in shape to play.

Tiger's trying to give us what we all want. Not sure if anyone just saw his 2nd shot on 15, but he is going to win.

Damn. More than 9 players within two shots of the Masters lead. Not looking good for El Tigre but the dude came back from 7 shots down today. One of the best Masters ever. And Tiger is officially back.

This is such a shame. How many of us would hope for just a small part of the opportunity with which this guy was presented. He just keeps on stepping in it.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Bond has been set at just over $1 million in a theft case against a former Ohio State and NFL player whose career was derailed by a gambling addiction.

Attorney Sam Shamansky says Art Schlichter had hoped to be released from jail to get treatment for the addiction. Schlichter was charged in February with stealing more than $1 million from a Columbus-area woman by deceiving her about why he took the money.

The 50-year-old Schlichter spent 10 years in prison for gambling-related crimes. He played at Ohio State between 1978 and 1981 and in the NFL for the Baltimore and Indianapolis Colts and Buffalo Bills.

If Schlichter posts bond, he must remain on house arrest at his mother's home in Washington Court House in southwest Ohio. He also is not to have contact with the alleged victim.

A federal judge in Minnesota granted players an injunction Monday to lift the NFL lockout, according to a report. NFL owners are almost certain to appeal the decision.

U.S. District Judge Susan Richard Nelson ruled in favor of the plaintiffs in Brady v. NFL and also denied the owners a stay, NFL.com reported. If the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit in St. Louis doesn't grant the owners a stay, the 2011 season could start in theory

Well, well, well lol

Tressel Resigns
Ohio State head football coach Jim Tressel has resigned, the Columbus Dispatch has reported, citing university sources.
The Dispatch obtained a memo university president E. Gordon Gee sent to OSU trustees Monday morning:
"I write to let you know that later this morning we will be announcing the resignation of Jim Tressel as head coach of the University's football program. As you all know, I appointed a special committee to analyze and provide advice to me regarding issues attendant to our football program. In consultation with the senior leadership of the University and the senior leadership of the Board, I have been actively reviewing the matter and have accepted Coach Tressel's resignation.
"My public statement will include our common understanding that throughout all we do, we are One University with one set of standards and one overarching mission. The University's enduring public purposes and its tradition of excellence continue to guide our actions," Gee wrote.
Assistant coach Luke Fickell will serve as interim coach all of next season, sources said.

Check out this link to Wikipedia. Some interesting stats / facts from MLB 1961, fifty years ago. Did you know there were two All-Star games? The American League expanded by 2 teams to 10. The National League had 8 teams.

Yankee Trivia:

Five players on the Yankees, whose last name began with the letter "M", all hit a home run in the same game. Can you name them?

Gotta be a trick question (i.e. the same game being opening day or something similar).

Dodgers file for bankruptcy.

http://www.tmz.com/2011/06/27/l-a-dodger...am-payroll-mlb/

Quote:
It's a huge development in the saga of the troubled team. Frank McCourt has been struggling to make the payroll. Interestingly, the creditors include 23 current team members and former Dodger Manny Ramirez, who is owed $20,992,086. Andrew Jones, also a former member, is owed $11,075,000 and current slugger Matt Kemp is owed $216,944.

And legendary announcer Vince Scully is a creditor who is owed $152,778.

The top 40 creditors are owed a total of $74,121,433.

As much as I love seeing the struggles of the Dodgers, my worst nightmare would be for someone like Mark Cuban, who wants to buy a baseball team, come into a sport that has no salary cap... in the same division as my Giants. I wouldn't be surprised if it happens and the Dodgers would compete with the Yankees in payroll. frown
