I agree that dog fighting should be against the law, but Vick got twice the sentence that anyone with similar charges ever received. He served the time and now is free to continue making a living in his profession, which just happens to be professional football. I don't think it matters whether he has true remorse or not. Some dead pitbulls, big deal. I got my Vick jersey today. I'll wear it proudly for every Eagles game.

Klyd, how old is your son? Does he play legion (or junior legion)?

Freddie, I happen to agree with you about Vick. The guy did his time. End of story. That's what the judicial system is in place for. To punish and, hopefully, rehabilitate. And rehabilitation isn't possible without second chances. BUT, I find your stance inconsistent.

A few weeks ago in the Pete Rose thread, you were just about the only board member who didn't think he "did his time." What makes him any different than Michael Vick, except for the fact that Vick is going to put on an Eagles jersey?

PB, what you fail to realize is that society describes and imposes constraints upon its members the violation of which invites admonition in the form of fines or imprisonment or other judicial renderings. However, those societal constraints and admonitions do not preclude society's individuals from imposing their own admonitions as long as they do not violate constraints.

Vick's insidious and repugnant behavior betrays his deep-seated lack of respect for life. He derives pleasure from harm to and destruction of life (just like Freddie C does) instead of from the enhancement and preservation of life without harm.

Freddie, my older son, who turned 16 in May, played senior teeners, which is just below Legion. He didn't try out for Legion as he's been dealing with a health issue, which seems hopefully to be resolving. He's playing Legion this Fall.

My younger boy (14) played Teener, but is playing for a 16 and under travel team. He's always played in a league that was a year older than his age, but he does well. I don't know if he had a growth spurt in early July, but he's hitting the ball a lot harder and deeper since then. I think also that he's seeing faster pitching than his teener league offered, and if you get hold of a good fastball, you can really drive it.

Next spring the boys will be a junior and freshman in high school and will go out for the respective teams. It's a very large high school, so making the varsity and junior varsity teams can be tough.

Do any of you recall Superfan, a sports talk show host that I remember from the 70s? I used to listen to him in the afternoons on a station in the DFW area. I recall that he went after Dave Kopay(?) who I believe was the first admitted gay NFL layer and he caught alot of flack for doing so. I wanted to know what ever happended to Superfan.

Roethlisberger rejects settlement in sex assault suit
Wednesday, September 09, 2009 The Associated Press

The attorney for Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is rejecting a settlement offer by a former Nevada casino worker who claims the Super Bowl winner sexually assaulted her.

Attorney David Cornwell says the woman's offer is bizarre.

The woman wants Mr. Roethlisberger to admit to the allegations, apologize and donate $100,000 to the Committee to Aid Abused Women, a Reno nonprofit organization that offers support to domestic violence victims.

In a statement today, Mr. Cornwell says the proposal insults women who have legitimately suffered from sexual misconduct.

The woman sued the Super Bowl-winning quarterback in July, accusing him of assaulting her in 2008 in a hotel across the street from a golf course where he was playing in a celebrity tournament.

Mr. Roethlisberger has denied the allegations.

I don't know BAM - the Roethlisberger accuser might be nuts. But the fact that she was not trying to get money for herself makes her seem a bit more believable. She definitely has some issues and made some questionable decisions. However, if she was simply trying to cash in (as many believed), why would she agree to donate the settlement money and give it to a third party? If nothing else, the accuser generated some much needed positive publicity for herself with the settlement offer.

What makes her accusations ridiculous though is the fact that after the apparent tryst (or alleged rape) with Roethlisberger she sent out a slew of emails to friends bragging how she's hoping that he'll take her to dinner and see her again. I think her attorneys know that her credibility is suffering, and are looking for a way to get out of the mess gracefully...and have the legal fees paid.

Serena Williams is completely devoid of a shred of decency and class. In the midst of losing her match on Saturday at the U.S. Open, she disagreed with a controversial call by one of the officials.

This was Williams' action toward the umpire who made the controversial call:

But Serena angrily confronted the lineswoman who made the call, dropping the f-word liberally and, getting in her face and waving her racket and later the ball menacingly, saying, "I swear to God I'm [expletive] going to take this [expletive] ball and shove it down your [expletive] throat, you hear that? I swear to God."

SO glad that she lost due to her fine of one point. Talk about unsportsmanlike! Terrible.

I was rooting for Serena before that incident, and although that foot fault was controversial and probably shouldn't have been called, Serena destroyed the line between anger and violence. What she said to that lines woman was indefensible.

I was surprised by the outburst because Serena always seemed to be a very intelligent, classy and together on and off the court. Her explosion is uncommon for her sport. The point deduction was appropriate.

I found it mildly amusing that the line judge told the head judge that Serena had threatened to kill her. She took the shove the ball down your throat remark literally.

I just saw the same thing about Urlacher, Don Sicilia. That is too bad - one of the best players in the game. Between his injury and the horrific start to Cutler's season, I imagine some of the Super Bowl talk in Chicago has quieted down.

It was just my luck - DirecTv offered a free weekend of "NFL Sunday Ticket" yesterday. We are selling our house and we had to be out from 1:30-5:00. cry As cool as it was to see Brees hit Colston in the early stages of the NO-Detroit game, there were plenty of dud games yesterday, too. I probably will not order Sunday Ticket as there are enough games to view on network TV among the 1:00, 4:00, Sunday & Monday night offerings.

This past Friday night I saw the best high school game I've seen in years. My sons' high school beat State College, a perennial power in PA, 24-22. State College scored a td with about 5 minutes left, but failed on the 2 point conversion. They got the ball back, and made a strong effort to try to get into field goal range, but were picked off on the last play. It's amazing to see the size and speed of today's high school players.

My son, J, will be participating this week in a travel baseball tournament, sponsored by "Hooters." Appropriately, it is a wood bat tournament. If we do well in the tournament, I told the team, we'll support the sponsors and go to Hooters.

We finished third in the tournament, but it was well worth it knocking off the #1 seed when our leftfielder hit a last inning three run homer and the team held on for a 3-2 win. The games were pushed back because of the rain, so our semi-final loss ended at 10 pm last night with the championship game starting 15 minutes later.

J played very well, going 3 for 4 w/ 4 RBIs in the loss. He's moved into the cleanup spot even though he's two years younger than his teammates and competition. His pitching was good at times, but against some of the seasoned teams, hestruggled.

The umpires in the first game on Saturday made a couple of questionable calls, so I couldn't resist joking with them after the game, "I know why this is a Hooters' tournament...because the umpires are two big boobs." Only one of them laughed.
