Before Michael goes out to shoot Sollozzo and McCluskey, Sonny, Michael, Tessio, Clemenza and another guy is in the mall sitting at the table, if I remember right.

I just can't remember who that last guy was ohwell Was it Rocco?

Do you know who I am? I'm Moe Greene! I made my bones when you were going out with cheerleaders!

This exact question was a hot discussion about a month ago. Here are some of the posts regarding your question :

Some here say it's Rocco, but others think it looks nothing like him.
A small point to be sure, but you have to wonder.....if it isn't Rocco, what's a "nobody" doing sitting in on such an important and ostensibly secret meeting of the inner circle.
Any help would be appreciated.

More interestingly, there's a second mystery man. Not when they're eating, but when leaving. The first one looks like the guy at the table, but who's the second guy??

As for my opinion, I've come to the conclusion that it is Rocco.

When is the first time we see Neri onscreen in the first film? I can't think of anything before they go out to Vegas and meet with Moe Greene. I don't recall seeing him prior to McCluskey's killing.

In re: to this post, I always thought it was Rocco at the table with the other guys. He aged quite a bit from the time the first and second films were made. Or maybe, as in the case of Hagen, Rocco also wore a rug in the original film.

I'll eat my canoli from the inside out if that is Rocco sitting at the table in GFI eating chinese food. As some one else posted, the actor who played him (or his makeup) would have had to have aged significantly between the making of the two films. Check out the hairline. Besides, in GFI, that character is not limping. Rocco had a limp.

I've always believed it was Rocco at the table with the Chinese takeout. Just before he left for Miami International in GFII, Rocco asked me if I knew any good chow mein joints near the airport. wink
Neri first appears in his cop uniform, sweating, in GF.

Sure. The Great Wall in Coral Gables. Its perfect for us. small, good food, everybody minds his own business. In the men's room they have one of those old fashioned toilets with the chain thing.

And while he is there, try the Szechuan Chicken. Its the best in the city.

Nah, I've given up on this one. ohwell

But I still say it's not Rocco, though.

The fact that to me at least it doesn't look like Rocco, it would not be logical for Rocco to be at this meeting having dinner with those members of the innermost inner circle.

In the house in another room as a bodyguard, sure. But not at the table eating a #1 combination plate.

Don't forget that Clemenza rated him highly, maybe they had big plans for Rocco.

Wouldn't it have had to been earlier than this? I swear we see him in Vegas at the Moe Green meeting. I know that happens in the book, but maybe I'm confusing the novel with the movie? confused

Goombah, in the novel he's at the Moe Green meeting. But I don't think he's there in the film. There's a guy in a sportcoat and a turtleneck shirt who looks a bit like Neri, but it isn't him. (BTW: the guy's outfit is right out of the late Sixties, whereas the scene in the film is set around 1954.)
The story of Neri's life as a cop and his introduction to the Corleones was one of the best in the novel. Too bad it didn't find its way into the film. At least we had a deleted scene showing how Rocco got where he was.

The guy in the turtleneck is one of Greene's men. There's another one of his there also. Yes, Al is there. He first appears behind Mike as Mike is walking through the hallway of the hotel with Fredo on the way to room where the meeting will be held.

By the way, in about an half hour GF will begin on the Spike channel.
