I just saw a story on the news about a young family that was killed by carbon monoxide poisoning.

Two years ago, our carbon monoxide detector went off. When our local gas company came to check it out, they found the reading from our burner to be 9,999. They told us it was surely much higher, but their equipment only had a 4 digit readout. They turned off the gas to our house and we had to open all the windows (and had to replace the burner and hot water heater). My daughter had fainted earlier in the day. The gas company told us that she was surely showing the first signs of poisoning. He also delivered the very frightening news that if we had gone to bed that night without addressing the problem, we would probably have been killed in our sleep.

As winter sets in, please make sure that you have a functioning carbon monoxide detector.

VERY scary!! I saw/heard the story in the news, too... but yours puts a face on it, and makes it even more terrifying -- I'm just REALLY glad y'all made it thru... but so many don't, and that's sad \:\(

EVERYONE should have a CO detector whether they think they need one or not!!

I studied Italian for 2 semesters. Not once was a "C" pronounced as a "G", and never was a trailing "I" ignored! And I'm from Jersey! tongue lol

Doesn't your gas company know that Surely is a boy??

All joking aside, thats a good reminder, SB. Those poor people that died (not too far from me) never should have. A simple CO detector could have saved them.

Speaking of which, I was awoken one AM a couple months ago with a fire inspection... they checked mine, and it FAILED! Why? Cuz the freakin' batteries weren't placed right! And I know I'm not a freakin' dumbazz, but apparently I was during that moment -- so please, even if you have CO and smoke detectors -- please CHECK THEM to be sure they work!!

I live in an apartment and don't think there is CO detector. What is the major cause of CO production inside a house?

Mine was a malfunctioning gas boiler. It can also come from a hot water heater or a gas dryer.

SC, figures that the damn bird didn't die!!!

Carbon monoxide is especially problematic when housing ventilation is blocked. Sometimes after heavy snow accumulations you hear of deaths.

More than once I've heard of people dying after they bring their gas grills inside to cook in the winter.

Just about everyone knows this is a no-no.
