As a former public defender, I spent quite a bit of time in prisons.

The only time I was locked in was the time I was meeting with a client, who happened to be a serial killer. We were locked in a meeting room that was 6' by 6'. After an hour I buzzed the guard to let us out, but he walked away from his post.

We were stuck in there an extra half hour and my client was getting more agitated by the minute.

"So...how's the weather?"

Exactly. I remember trying to engage him in a conversation about the 49ers, which was his favorite team.

I was more concerned about a general disturbance. He and I actually got along well.

Early in my career I did some criminal work, and I always remember that great feeling when you walk past the last moving gate that letsyou get the hell out.

That said I once had to take the deposition of a carpet thief (the guy was an expert on oriental carpets and he had robbed my client) at a Federal Prison in North Carolina. The place was beautiful...minimum security, great mountain views... I could have stayed there a few weeks!

What strikes me about the federal minimum security prisons is how bright they are. It is a nice contrast with many of the dark prisons that seem to have come from the Middle Ages.

A State minimum security prison in Dallas, PA has tv monitors in many of the cells. I was leaving one friday evening when a guard was loading up a VCR that was going to show a movie to all the cell mates. I asked him what tonight's movie was. It was The Apple Dumpling Gang. i left to avoid the riot.

My daughter was a criminal justice major. She did a college internship in the Middlesex County (NJ) Sheriff's Office. On Halloween, she told me, the sheriff, in the spirit of the day, put the "Halloween welcome mat" at the entrance where they brought in the prisoners. When a prisoner stepped on the mat, a skeleton dropped down from the ceiling and an audio of a spooky laugh and screams played. Welcome to the Middlesex County Jail guys...

I did time in juvenile correction facilities which of course,is nothing compared to "big boys" prison.It's funny that this thread came up,as i am currently in the process of keeping my sweet virgin ass outta prison and just so you guys don't get the wrong idea,it's nothing hardcore,just a few punch ups i found myself in at my own friggin gigs.Meh...such is life.

I don't get it. Jail? All I get is a donations page.

Yes I survived and I can now sit down without any pain

The MDA jail-bail is one of MDA's most successful signature events. I did this once befoe about 10 years ago when I lived in Wisconsin. Essentially they get people in the community to "agree" to go to jail (in this case was a community theater) and start calling to raise bail money to be released. It is a bit easier now as you can do on-line fundraising prior to the event.

Long story short, I was too busy to do the online fundraising and in fact finally built the web page the day or two before the event so I only had a couple hundred dollars raised. The day of the event -- you report to jail at your assigned time and stay for as long as you want. My bail goal was $1,300 so I was bound and determined to make the goal.

Side note -- I am not sure who "nominated" me to go to jail, but when MDA called I told them I would do it on the condition that their Executive Director raised money for me (The American Stroke Foundation) at our next event

So,, I arrived and made a few calls and made my goal in an hour or so. Most people said they would give more if they would keep me in longer

I remember when I did this back in '94 or '95. They had some volunteers actually come and pick me up and escort me to jail.

But it is a fun event -- they have good food and drinks, and, of course, the money goes for a great cause.

Glad to see ya supporting diabetes, alzheimers, food shelters, et al... I have several favorite organizations as well. I also have some strict guidelines about who gets my support as well (program costs vs admin/fundraising costs etc,,,,) Maybe I should do a post on the "Beware of wolves (charities) in sheeps clothing" for the holiday season to as guideline of questions to ask charities when you are approached during the holiday season.
