Is it understandable the way fredo reacted after being stepped over by mike?

He must have been hurt and Roth and ola creating more problems by stirring the sitution its understandable why he acted the way he did.

What do you think?

Also what do you think Fredo felt when his father made mike the don and not him and when mike says says "pop wanted it that way".

did he hate his father, i think he was hurt by his father because he says "thats not the way i wanted it!".

Your thoughts?

There's a whole thread on this somewhere, Zaf.

Yes, it covered part of your question by wondering if Vito could have been kinder to Fredo.
But, to respond to oart of your question:
Fredo's reaction was not justified. He should have realized that he just wasn't, and never had been, Don-material; and that Vito and Michael were actually being kind to him by not putting him in a more responsible position.

The critical part of that marvelous boathouse scene, IMO, is when Fredo gets semi-hysterical--"it ain't the way I wanted it..." This tells me that his resentment was very, very deep-seated, and that he never came to terms with not being the Don. He'd had years to get over it, but he never did. And, IMO, he expressed a good part of his resentment by helping Roth and Ola. That's why I believe that, after that outburst, any thought Michael may have had to giving his brother a pass faded before the realization that Fredo's irrational resentment was dangerous to him.

Fredo's reaction is typical of those siblings who feel that a sibling is favored by a parent. In this case, there's alot at stake: money, power, etc. So, there's more drama associated with being stepped over tahn accrues to an average family. Fredo may have realized what he lost by Vito's choice. He certainly resented being sent on errands. Also, some things he did himself invited others' lack of respect for him: e.g., controlling his wife. His outburst was partly out of scorn for himself.

Imagine that this guy REALLY believed that he should have been considered as the heir to the family Donship!!!!

Think about that! "Don Fredo Corleone"

How scary is that!

Pretty scary. Jeez what would have happened?

The Tahoe estate would lay in ruins.

Fredo would move back to New York, where he would throw an extravagant party after he paid 100 million dollars to get an award from the Archbishop after which he would get scammed for another 600 million by the Catholic Church.

He would hire George Hamilton to be his consigliere.

He would stand by helpless while his daughter got into an incestuous relationship.

He would command such fear that Connie and Vincent could order hits on people when he got sick.

He would fail to see that his takeover bid of a legitimate business was not a done deal in New York, but could only be ratified in the Vatican, and would be nullified by the death of an already aged pope.

And finally be so lax on security at an opera in Palermo when he knew an assassin who never missed was looking for him that a family member needlessly died, and would probably end up alone and a totally broken man who fell off a chair on a dusty lot in Sicily.

All in all not very smaht.

"Io sono stanco, sono imbigliato, and I wan't everyone here to know, there ain't gonna be no trouble from me..Don Corleone..Cicc' a port!"

"I stood in the courtroom like a fool."

"I am Constanza: Lord of the idiots."

Now if Fredo was still alive for GF 3 and that happened to him I would believe it more and it would be a better movie.

And I wonder, Still I wonder, Who'll stop the rain.

You know Turnbull, I feel the same way about Cazale. Everytime I watch the boathouse scene in GFII, I realize more and more what a fantastic job he did playing the part of Fredo.

The way that he makes his body twitch and his face distort when he goes off on his tirade is just amazing.

Actually, he had to pee.

I believe Cazale is the only actor in which all of the movies appeared in are in the IMDB Top 250. His short career was very stellar.

Had cancer not intervened, who knows, Cazale could have been one of the all-time greats.

I know it so funny yet sad at the same time.
