It was a way to show that Michael, an American, was schooling his new bride, a sheltered Sicilian girl, in the ways of modern American women--i.e., driving. In fact, Calo says, "She'll make you a real American wife." And, of course, it set us up for a nice bit of drama that profoundly affected Michael's behavior from then on.
