For those who may remember the Pulitzer winning journalist and author, David Halberstam (The Best and the Brightest, Summer of '49), who wrote influential titles on America's involvement in Vietnam, as well as numerous award winning sports books, was killed in a car crash yesterday after giving a lecture at U of C Berkeley.

Summer of '49 was a great book for baseball fans. I understand that he was en route to interview Y.A. Tittle for a book he was writing, called The Game, dealing with the 1958 NFL Championship between the Colts and Giants.

Great baseball writer! He'll be missed.

October 1964 is one of my all time favorite baseball books.

What a shame.

Halberstam was a brilliant and versatile author. "Best and Brightest" was an exceptionally insightful work. I also liked "The Fifties," which looked behind the standard cliches that most writers rely on in describing that decade.
