When you visit this site you can enter your address and a map will pop up with your house as a small icon of a house. There will be red, blue and green dots surrounding your entire neighborhood. When you click on these dots a picture of a criminal will appear with his or her home address and the description of the crime he or she has committed.



The best thing is that you can show your children these pictures and see how close these people live to your home or school.

I know of this site, my daughter sent it to me months ago I have checked it out. It's amazing to know how many predators/sexual offenders, etc live and work in every area. Any area I checked, be it my house, my job or whatever, I was amazed to see the results. It's good for everyone, especially parents of young children to check out.

I have two observations...

Firstly I am surprised by the large number of offenders. I am sure my area is not particularly known for criminal activity. This must be a nation wide phenomenon. So many red squares (home of the offenders) near my area...

Secondly and more importantly, why are the addresses and photos published here. Even if the person is reformed or regretful of his crime, there will be so much discrimination against that person in the society. The sentence given by courts should be the only punishment.

How close is the nearest offender from your home? From my house, the nearest offender is maybe a mile or more away. Is anyone here living within a distance of few houses from an offender?

From what I can tell the nearest offender from me is also about a mile or so. If you click on the red or yellow square it gives the picture and you can click "convictions" and it'll tell you what/if they've been convicted of anything.

I tried at least 6/7 (most in my area were red) and all were convictions for "LEWD OR LASCIVIOUS ACTS WITH CHILD UNDER 14 YEARS".

First line of his description is "SCAR FACE"

More importantly?

Is protecting the identities of convicted sex offenders more important than protecting our chidren's well being?

You would think that having their identities so available would make these criminals want to get help or perhaps make them at least attempt to walk the straight and narrow wouldn't you? However, after watching the "To Catch A Predator" show, and seeing how many of these people are seen days or weeks later attempting to meet children yet again is amazing.

Will somebody put in an address of a school. I put in my work address and found even more in that area than in my home area. Maybe just coincidence, but see if others find the same. Pretty damn scary!!!

The closest one is 1.09 miles from my house. Most of them were convicted for molestation, it seems. Apparently suburuban upstate-New York is the place to be if you like to have sex with children.

I'm surprised the Real Estate lobby hasn't tried to ban this on the Capital. They would have to tell clients:

"BTW, I have to inform you that a mile away lives a child molestor, 3 rapists reside over in the town, and that a beastiality offender is your neighbor. Enjoy! Your neighbor won't cause you problems, unless you have a dog as a pet."

The offender nearest me is 2.8 miles (I live in the country). He had indecent contact with a child: female, age 0-13.

Fortunately, all my kids are grown. But I have three young grandchildren. So, what good does this information do me or them? What do I do with it?

From everyone's responses, we know that there is no place where there are no sex offenders nearby. One logical thing one can do is to choose to live in a place where the nearest offender is a couple of miles away. So all the information that is needed is the distance of the offender from your home and the nature of his crime.
You are right - protecting the children is more important than protecting offenders. But maybe they are not offenders anymore. who knows? What is the point of putting people in prison for several years, if we are going to punish them again. I am not saying I will be comfortable to live near an offender, but I need not have to know his name and address. "A rapist 0.1 miles away" is good enough information for me to decide whether or not I want to live in that house.

Anyone seen Little Children here?

So, one of you that has little kids tell us: how do you make use of this offender information?

How about, If you see this man, don't speak to him?? How about, If you see this man hanging around your bus stop, tell Mom right away? How about, If this man invites you to his home, tells you his dog is lost, asks for directions, tries to give you candy, tells you that he just got and XBox, or any of the myriad other ways that a sex offender tries to ensnare a child, your child knows better.

Many children believe that the neighbor that they see every day is OK. Most crimes against children are committed by someone they know and trust, however, and NOT by strangers. Warning them that the person who lives in THAT house is NOT a safe person could save your children, and you, a lifetime of heartache.

Forewarned is forearmed. And while the recidivism rate for criminals is high, for sex offenders, it is off the chart.
