I was just reading a number of threads here and this "self-censor" thing really puzzles me....if ppl choose to swear why do they use the stars?

I mean...if you dont want to swear then nobody's forcing you...but if you are going to then say the damn word! I just cant understand these stars...a few examples:

SC's thread : "What the F*UCK is going on with gas prices?"

I really dont know whats the point of the star? we know what the word is. If you dont want to say it say "what the HELL is going on with gas prices" instead. And if you want to use fuck say "what the fuck". I really dont understand this third option ppl are using all around the net. SC, please explain to me if u can whats the point of the star in your "F*CK" cos for the life of me I cant get it.

The only time I can understand the use of stars is when you're quoting someone else who used that word and you then feel the need to censor it.

But choosing to write the word yourself, and then censor yourself -- I just cant get it.

This is not just SC. Like I said, I see it all over the net, here too in another thread called "Queens mugger" Pizzaboy said "moth*****er"....or in the RRA' oscarblog thread Irishman was happy that Martin won and said "I F*UCKING KNEW IT!"

And the list of examples is endless. So please, ppl who use it and can explain to me why they do so...thanx in advance.

-and if you wonder, then no, I dont really use swearing all that much, more like hardly, but when I do....then I say FUCK. And if I feel uncomfortable saying "fuck" then I simply wont use that word.

Who the fuck are you are that I need to explain myself to you?

In all seriousness, its nothing more than a modest attempt to clean up my gutter mouth while trying to still convey my anger at whatever it is to which I'm referring.

I use the word (too much) in my daily vocabulary but I'm almost always cognizant of where/when I'm using it. I'm somewhat old-fashioned and try not to curse like that in front of ladies and children. I guess this is an extension of that.

Dunno if that makes sense, but who the f*ck cares??

Well, I can't really answer for all the potty-mouths on here.

But I can say that it's usually the more polite way of typing such words, like they would do on TV or in newspapers.

I studied Italian for 2 semesters. Not once was a "C" pronounced as a "G", and never was a trailing "I" ignored! And I'm from Jersey! tongue lol

I've posted quite a bit on these Boards and somehow I've managed to avoid using any foul language. Actually, I haven't avoided it - I've chosen not to use it out of respect for my fellow Board members. I think the use of foul language by some posters is an attempt to plug the gaps in their intellects.

They're not saying "F*UCK", they're saying "f*ck". There's a big difference. If they were saying "F*UCK" I would totally agree with and understand your statement. However. They're just trying to be polite for other board members.

Me? I say fuck it.

I almost never use any swear words in my conversations. You can insult or infuriate a person without using a single swear word. I think the use of swear words reduces the impact of the insult. But I am not against their use in writing or movies. It is so funny to watch scarface or casino because of the number of times they use the word Fuck

I guess the star just represents the censorship, meaning the person who wrote the word wants to reduce the impact of the word, and by censoring yourself you make it more respectable...

I happen to swear a lot when i open my mouth but when it comes to writing stuff down(and obviously keeping one's gob shut)i don't seem to swear much....
So its obviously my mouth's fault for all the cussing that tumbles out....occasionly

I don't actually like the way it looks when written, because "ck" is very ugly, I think. When I speak it I tend to elongate the "f" and soften it, and then don't dwell on the "u". I usually say, very softly, "ffagh", with the "gh" a very throaty sound. It makes things very flexible, and useful for many contexts. If I'm angry at someone, I find the word useful, along with c-unt, in showing my anger. But I find I rarely have to use the word in that way.

I'm still not sure if people would be intimidated by my use of "fuck" or whether it would lend a warming personality to my presence.

I know what it's used for and why, but I was questioning the effect of it. When you read the word you still read the same word, you're still saying "fuck" inside of your head. The star only registers visually, and even then it might now (like I said, I see little difference in the censor sign and the letter u, both are interchangeable common signs).

If anything, it's the "ck" which makes things ugly, not the noun; the blunt, abrupt sound of the word gets all of its potential aggression from the end of the word, but how harshly you say that. It's the same with c-unt, but there it's at the beginning. So if anything, why not write it as *unt or fu**?

Well put SC. That's exactly the reason that I sometimes use the stars in a curse word. I also use them when I am just having a casual discussion about something. But there are times, let's say for example, someone posts a story about a child that was attacked by a pervert or molested, or something of that nature, and I will spell out the actual curse because I am really angry.

I guess that you can say that if I use a curse in casual discussion here on the boards, I try to censor it out of (what some may think is old fashioned), respect for the ladies.

But when I am really mad about something as disgusting as perversion against a minor, or something of that nature, then I don't give two fucks how I spell it!

I couldn't agree more DC, I think thats where we ALL should draw the line. It takes a real sick bastard to have ANY connection between perversion and a minor, I have no respect for the scumbags.
