Personally, I belive Hymen Roth was the smartest enemy the Corleone family ever went up against. He almost got Mike.

By greatest, I assumed that to mean who was the enemy that was most likely to overthrow the Corleone Family. With this in mind, I think it comes down to Roth and Barazini. Of course they were a threat in different times. I dont think that Roth was that much of a threat when Vito was in power. Since Vito gave Roth his start, and they worked together, I think he still had a bit of loyalty in him. When Mike came along, and the way Mike was handling things, I think Roth went against him.

I voted for Barazini. I think overall Barazini had the edge over Vito, mainly because he wanted to get in the drug business, and had the support of the other families. Vito knew these, and was smart enough to rethink his position concerning drugs. He was able to make concessions and still save face. I really don't think Roth would have been that much of threat, if Mike wasn't so self destructive. Yes he was able to squeak by Roths attacks on him, but only a suicide assasination was the way he got him. I don't think Mike could outthink Roth. cool

By greatest I'm assuming you mean the most powerful. If that's the case then Don Luchessi.

Well, with Roth he was the most dangerous cuz he somehow Mike's brother Fredo into it, and to pull that off by making family members traitors (not counting Carlo and Tessio since they were in the family by law or association) makes you extremely dangerous.

I feel though that Luchessi had to be the greatest threat since he was head of Immobiliare, had Don Altobello under his thumb, and made Joey Zasa, who controlled the Corleone Family in New York a pawn in his little scheme., had members of the Vatican kill the Pope. All that power, would overwhelm someone in trying to escape.

My vote was for Roth because of the depth of his treachery. Roth engineered the Tahoe hit in Michael's bedroom with the help of Fredo. Roth directed the attempted hit on Frankie Five Angels to make it appear as if Michael was behind it. This prompted Frankie to turn against Michael and cop a plea with the government.

In effect, these two plots by Roth led to Michael losing his family. Once Michael learned who the traitor was, Fredo was killed. All of the treachery & deception led to Michael losing the trust of his other (non-blood) brother, Tom Hagen, and his wife, Kay.

I believe that Michael's life unraveled in GFII mostly because of the actions & manipulations of Roth.

I voted for Sollozzo, because if it weren't for the luck of Vito surviving the hit, the Corleone family would have been rapidly destroyed.

Roth. He had power, money, cunning and above all, something which no other Corleone enemy had, Michael's trust.........but apparently not Vito's wink !!!

I would say Roth didn't have Michael's complete trust as keep your friends close, but your enemies closer.

Sollozo was pretty twisted and went about his business in a sick way. When he tells Tom that Vito is dead, you see that Tom is upset, but he also accepts it because thats the way it goes in terms of gangsters. People die, power is achieved.

its gotta be barzini.

his planning was great with him and tattaglia together and the plan killing Santino was well constructed. He wwas a good enemy and tested the Corleone's to the max. I dont think Roth was as bad as barzini

It's not personal, Sonny...It's strictly business
