All fantastic Mob movies.

If you really want to get an good idea as to how the mob really works, then I suggest that you watch Goodfellas. It probably is one of the movies that is closest to the real life inner workings of the mob.

If you really are interested in learning about the mob, I also suggest that you read the book The Five Families by Selwyn Raab.

You should check out the REAL LIFE ORGANIZED CRIME thread. Some good stuff in there including a topic about mob books.

If you are referring to the original book Donnie Brasco, the answer is yes - absolutely. And, if you haven't seen the movie version, I would say read the book first.

As far as The Way of the Wiseguy, I know others may disagree with me somewhat, but I enjoyed it. Be advised, though, that the book is a rather quick read, and do not expect anywhere near the substance of Donnie Brasco. Even though it is informative, it really seems that Pistone just wrote the thing to make a quick dollar. I'm not sorry I read it, though. Also, truth be told, searching the Internet at sites like BookFinder4U.com allowed me to save a lot of money on these books.

Another book I'd recommend is The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Mafia - Second Edition by Jerry Capeci. (I was able to find this online for around $5.00 including postage.) Excellent book, and the author's website Gang Land is definitely worth checking out.

Now, regarding Pistone's new book Donnie Brasco: Unfinished Business, it's just come out so I haven't gotten around to that one yet. There is a thread about it elsewhere in this very forum.

"It was a grass harp... And we listened."

"Do any human beings ever realize life while they live it? Every, every minute?"

"No. Saints and poets, maybe... they do some."

I don't recommend "The Untouchables" there are just so many things I hate about the film itself. The one thing I hate is how De Palma kills Frank Nitti, who in real life commits suicide but in the movie gets thrown off a building by Elliot Ness. That and it tries to hard to be a good movie instead of just being one itself.

Now he doesn't have to watch the movie! You've already told him how one of the subplots turns out!

The Untouchables is a pretty good movie. Not great, not horrible, but pretty good. And while some of the real life factual events are turned and twisted to suit hollywood's desire to put their spin on things, it is an entertaining movie that is made that much better by a spectacular performance by Sean Connery. Connery's acting alone is worth the price of addmission for that movie.

And of course Robert DeNiro is vintage DeNiro playing the part of Al Capone.

It's definitely worth a viewing or two. You'll enjoy it.

Sean Connery was brilliant, alongside a very young Andy Garcia, who I enjoyed much more in this film than in GF 3.
My favorite exhange in the whole movie was between the two;

Malone: That's all you need, one thieving wop on the team.
Stone: What's that you say ?
Malone: I said you're a lying member of a no good race.
Stone: Much better than you, you stinking Irish pig.
Malone: Oh, I like him.

I rather clean my eyes with brillo pads than watch that crap again. Connery and De Niro were good...but Garcia and Costner were FAR from it.

I don't like The Untouchables either...

Donnie Brasco is a very good read. The movie isn't as good as the book, but still not a bad movie.

Soem good non fiction books

Wiseguy- the book goodfellas is based on. I finished it in a week. Usually takes me 3 to read a book.

Made Men- about the Decalvacante family in NJ.

Mafia Dynasty- About the Gambino Family. Very detail and in depth.

Some Films
The old gangster movies like Scarface (1932), Little Cesear, Public Enenmy, and most of them are good.

I love The Untouchables. I thought that the entire cast was excellent. I don't think it's a great mob film, as it probably isn't very realistic, but it's still a good film.

I love when Connery is talking with Ness about getting Capone and tells him "You wanna know how you do it? Here's how, they pull a knife, you pull a gun. He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue. That's the Chicago way, and that's how you get Capone! Now do you want to do that? Are you ready to do that?"

But my favorite Connery line in the whole movie is when he tells the guy "Isn't that just like a wop? Brings a knife to a gun fight."
