I personally do not think this is a good scene. I'm glad it wasn't in the final version. We really don't need to know about this guy. I mean, who cares if he dies. It doesn't change the story. So why does everyone seem to really like it?

This is one of the most informative scenes in the Trilogy. At the beginning of the scene, we see the depth of Michael's estrangement from his father (and notice how the Don rolls his eyes in frustration when he asks about Michael's "American girlfriend"). We then see that the Don approves of Michael finishing college, though he's upset that Michael never comes to him as a son should. Finally, we see the Don's humanity at the deathbed of his old consigliere. It also explains a remark that Michael made earlier to Kay at the wedding re. Tom Hagen: "I think he's gonna be consigliere."

this is one of the most important scenes in the trilogy. he was a good part of the Don's life in his younger days and we can see the respect of the Don to his Consiliere up to the end. everyone cares for him because he was a good Consilere. . .

I really doubt this is one of the most important scenes in the movie.

And Turnbull, I think we see throughout the movie the relationship between Michael and Vito. When Vito says,"Where's Michael? We arn't taking the picture without Michael."
And when he shakes his head in bed when he hears Michael is a criminal.

And do we really need to know who the old consigliere was? I for one, do not see the need.

But, to each his own.

Maybe stupid but I link facial impressions to thoughts. When I see the old face of Genco I relate it to things like:

-Being Consiglieri is hard work
-Old faces mean that these people have seen a lot things in life

etc etc.

But this is my opinion.

Yes it is a very important scene, for the reasons that Turnbull states.

And you liar, teller of tall tales: you trample all the Lord's commandments underfoot, you murder, steal, commit adultery, and afterward break into tears, beat your breast, take down your guitar and turn sin into a song. Shrewd devil, you know very well that God pardons singers no matter what they do, because he can simply die for a song.

I really think this scene should of stayed it too. But the guy who played Genco overacted i think.

Anyway when I first saw the godfather, sonny is yelling at Tom about how he wants to kill Tattalgia, and Sonny says..."God damn it if I had a wartime consiglieri that was sicilian I wouldnt be in this place. Papa had Genco, look what I got." So when Sonny made that remark I had no idea what he was talkin about until I came to these boards and actually started like studying the movie. So if that scene with Genco would of been kept in there it could of answered alot of questions.

I buy you out. You don't buy me out.

c'mon joe......

this scene shows how powerful and respected even the closest people to the Godfather thought he was....the man is on his deathbed asking Vito to scare DEATH away!!!! if that doesn't help to paint a picture, what could???

it's one of the most important scenes in the Trilogy, and a big mistake that it was cut....

Joltin Joe, I live in a somewhat small town called Clinton. Its right on the Mississippi where the eastern part of Iowa juts out toward Illinois.

I don't know about anybody else but the Genco scene was VERY good. I had never gotten a REAL idea of Michael and Vito's realtionship until I saw that deleted scene. How Don Vito calls Mike's medals "christmas ribbons" (i think it was?)
The sarcasm and sort of dissapointment in him choosing to enlist, but also the pride he had in him for going to college. Thats a very important scene in my opinion. And then the scene where Genco is dying, that line where he says "Stay with me Godfather...so if Death comes, he'll see you and run away." That sort of genuine love and respect towards Don Vito is shown and the fact that Genco, while in a delirious state-actually thinks theres a way for the Don to negotiate ANYthing. It's a sweet scene. very classic. wink

The scene also adds some depths to the subplot of how Tom is accepted in the family. It is intresting to see why he brings Johnny Fontaine instead of Tom (allthough he is on business, but Im sure someone else could have gone to reason with Wolts. After all; he ordered Tom to travel to Hollywood AFTER he said "All my sons"...

Good point, Alberto! Also notice that Tom never refers to Vito as "Pop," "Dad" or any father-type title. In fact, he never refers to him by any name or title--not even "godfather." Just "you."

The Genco scene is nice and all, but there's too much removed (that is, time delay) from the young Genco from GF2 and the 2 minutes of the old Genco that was eventually cut from GF1. Genco was integral in GF2, for the most part. In GF1 it seemed like an afterthought. Of course, GF1 was made before GF2, but you get the idea. Coppola probably cut it out because of the "who's that" factor...

As for the "most important" scene cut from the Saga, I'd say it was the scene of Michael and Vito in the garden: "what about Sicily?... you gave your word, I didn't give mine...." After that, I'd say the scene where Sonny finds out it was Paulie who set up the old man, with the call from the telephone company guy (or whoever).

It's a very pivotal, informative, and well done scene, and i wish it was in the original cut of the movie. It relates perfectly to the likewise scene in the book.

I agree, I think the garden scene would've been a nice addition to that entire section, and I question why I was taken out...

The Addandano scene links GF I and GF II, in a nice way, I'm surprised it was cut, since it shows Vito's respect for the people who were around when he made his bones, and in general, was a good set of film.
