Yanks finish with [b]record $207 million payroll[/b]

The New York Yankees finished last year with a record $207.2 Million dollar payroll, more then 90 Million ahead of any other team, according to final figures compiled Friday by the Commissioners office.
Boston was second at $116.7 Million. with the New York Mets third at $104 million, followed by the Los Angeles Angels (97Million), Philadelphia (94.8 million) and the Los Angeles Dodgers (87.8 million)

I was hoping to find the entire list, as it's interesting to look at all the teams - the only thing I came across was this , which doesn't match up to yours.

So? If you have the money, spend it. Just like Boston and New York (Mets) also do.

Personally, I agree with what you say. Let them spend whatever they want to. They're not breaking any rules, they're paying plenty to the other teams in luxury tax, and they're still not winning any championships, despite having a payroll about 80% larger than any other team's.

Word is Cashman has already cut the payroll down by $20 million this offseason (with the only major catch being of course Johnny Damon)

This may be easy to say as a Blue Jay fan, what with Rogers suddenly giving J.P. Ricciardi the means and freedom to pursue stud players, but I think the whole Yankee payroll issue has been overblown. New York is the biggest English speaking metropolitan area in North America. New York is one of the biggest, most powerful and wealthiest cities in the world. The New York Yankees are arguably the most storied franchise in sports (Manchester United, the Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, Los Angeles Lakers?). Yes they do have an enormous amount of money at their disposal and arguments could be made that they have bought World Series Championships. Whether you agree with this assertion or not, I think the last five years have proven that the best individual players do not always make the best team. I think true baseball fans will root for a healthy baseball market in N.Y. (not necessarily for the Yankees or Mets) because if baseball is healthy in N.Y. it is (usually) healthy all over North America. Whether the Yankee payroll is 200 million dollars or 2 billion dollars, on opening day every team in Major League Baseball has the chance to reach the playoffs. There are 162 games in the season and there are 3 series in the playoffs. I don't care if you have 10 million dollars or over 100 million dollars it takes hard work to win consistently enough to reach the next level.

"Word Is" gives me the impression that it would be more like a rumor then real fact. Let us see what the teams really spend later in the season. In my first post the figures came from the Commissioners office, which I feel would have the real final figures for all the teams.

Money is surely another tool in this sport. Much like NASCAR racing. The teams with the money can do more, have more and should do better, that is the way one would think.
But, they don't win EVERY race either.

Actually, the Yankees were a much better all-around team in their years of winning 4 consecutive World Series titles, even if they didn't exactly have the best 3rd Baseman or whatever. Why? Because they had such a flow in the batting order and when playing with each other that seems to be absent with all these all-stars on the squad.

Still, the Yankees will still be dangerous with Johnny Damon on the roster now. Besides, who really thinks the Bo-Sox or Jays will take away yet another AL East division crown?

I couldn't agree more with you. I'm tired of people bringing up the issue. People need to just let it go. If it was another person's favorite team (a la the Florida Marlins) they'd be all for "buying division titles" etc etc etc. But because it's the Yankees and not their OWN team, there's a problem. Hypocrites! As you said, there's 162 games in the season and EVERY team has the chance to win it all regardless of payroll. As you pointed out, it's been 5 seasons since the Yankees won one. Get over it people, you are continuing to beat a dead horse here.
