How many people out there wrestle? I mean amatuer:

Freestyle, Folk Style, Greco-Roman, anything but that pro bullsh*t.

This year is my second year wrestling. I have learned alot, and plan on taking the varsity competition by storm next year. We're losing three BIG all-stars, but by next year, we'll have at least 8 seniors on a 14 man team...with 6 of those being all out powerhouses.

I personally wrestle 215 weight class this year, but I'm dropping to 189 next year, to replace a departing senior.

Anyoen else have experiences, fun times, etc.?

To quote my cousin - "It takes a special type of retard to join the wrestling team."

It's a sport that currently has no recognition in our culture over here which is a shame because i've always been intrigued in it ever since seeing AC Slater in Saved By the Bell wrestle.

Yes, we do have the WWF broadcast over here but I know that's what you definately don't mean.

I do have a question though. I once had a conversation with some Americans on the Steelers message board debating what this random person should learn as a martial art. I suggested a few, I've only studied boxing and kickboxing. But most notably I suggested boxing because of it's relevance on the street. Anyway, someone mentioned wrestling as a great self defense technique. I didn't believe it at first but he convinced me in cases where fights hit the floor, it's a useful tool to know.

Is it relevant as a self defense technique? The only flaw I can see in it is the fact a fight is hardly ever one on one. Which means you can't afford to be putting people in submission moves.

Turi - Wrestlign cna be a great self-defense. Really, there's very little submission style stuff. It's all to pin your opponent while making it hurt. Tapping out is for pussy's.

Anyway, just two weeks ago I was in a fight, and I used a double-leg takedown (standard move) to take this kid to the ground, then everytime he rolled over (to avoid my flurries of punches) I caught him in a half nelson and rolled him back.

So, yes, if used properly, wrestling can be a very good self-defense technique.

I only like the "fake" kind. WWF all the way baby! Do any of you guys watch the WWE (it's E now, no F).

I watch the WWE. Highly entertaining, once you get past the fact that is fixed, the storylines are fake, etc etc. But about 90% of all the Superstars have extensive amateur backgrounds. Oh, and to those who think that everything is fake, FYI, they do get hurt, people do die every now and then (Owen Hart, R.I.P.). Hating it because it's fake is stupid. That means you should hate movies because the action is fake, the special effects are fake, nobody really dies or hates each other. Just get over it, and enjoy.

Don E.,
Glad to see someone participating in one of the sports world's more pure endeavors. No pads, no team mates, just you and your opponent and a lot of guts, speed, strength, balance, reflexes, endurance.

I wrestled way back in the stone age and have followed the sport on and off at the high school and college level. See my thread on greatest sports events you've attended.

Your season must be coming to an end. Have your end-of-year tournaments been held? How did you do, or how will you do? This is the first year that NY State will have a small and large school state championship.

Thank you XXX! I also always compare wrestling to movies b/c they're both fake. I mean, people LOVE LOTR & hate wrestling. Um...which one is more realistic? Which one is more entertaining? I rest my case!

Haha, SC.

Hey I'd wrestle if I could, although even if I could I'd be hammered. Kickboxing suits my style better (I'm roughly 160lbs for 6'). I too wanted to read more about other wrestlers.

Just because we don't wrestle dones't mean we are "wimps." In high school I played other sports such as Cross-Country, Basketball, and a little Track. With that schedule I don't have a lot of time for wrestling.

Owen Hart's death really had nothing to do with wrestling whatsoever. Sure, indirectly, if he hadn't been a wrestler he wouldn't have done a special entrance from the room of the arena, but it was a freak accident where the rigging broke, and it was nobodies fault.

Anyways, longtime WWE fan here. (Mick Foley is GOOD! )

Don E and others,

We had a pinning move called "The Saturday Night Ride." You were face to face, chest to chest, pubic area to pubic with your legs wrapped around the outside of your opponents and then your feet hooked inside. I never used it....in wrestling that is.

I have never been interested in wrestling, but I think it can be a good sport. On the WWE, nothing pisses me off more. I CANNOT stand it.

Yeah, I never thought the angles were quite right, but it can be used as a set up move for .... the real pin.

Good luck in your regionals. Sad news from Seaford Long Island in NY. After their divisional tournament, 5 wrestlers were out at a diner for a much needed bite to eat. They had a road-rage incident that ended up with their car hitting several cars and a utility pole. One passenger (wrestler) was killed, one critical, three injured, including the driver. It turns out another driver yelled at them to turn their headlights on. They took offense....and,

I wrestled for fun when i was a kid, i dont know i guess my parents figured it would toughen me up and keep me fit and i enjoyed it a lot, it takes a lot of stamina and upper body strength and you have to be a real quick thinker too, take more than a second to figure out your next move and BAM! the guy has you down in a headlock, was good fun, i may do it again one time

To those who it may concern:
I don't have a problem with "pro" wrestling. It's just not my thing. They don't cut wieght, go through hellacious practices, and kill themselves just to pin some kid and make him cry in front of his mom.

Anyway, as my sig says, I'm starting Freestyle and Greco-Roman. Wish me luck and a non-injuring season (becuase my last two seasons lead to a broken hand ('02-'03) and a lacking of a helathy MCL ('03-'04).)
