The Wrong Side Of The Tracks
Has anyone checked this out yet? Boy am I glad they decided to scrap it! In a word-- BORING! No one wants to fall asleep in the first five minutes of a movie. With this opening it would be guaranteed. The shot opens with a slow reverse zoom (just like GFI) of the slimy reptilian archbishop Gilday. The dialogue is heavy-handed and ham-fisted. Out of nowhere George Hamilton as "B.J." appears over Don Michael's shoulder. While any deleted scenes from GFIII would have been nice, in my opinion they should have left this crappy footage out. It adds nothing, and is of such poor quality that it hardly bears watching twice. The extremely annoying "Property of Paramount" appears throughout the entire scene, and that REALLY sucks. Don Rico says "bite me Paramount!" smile

Power wears out those who do not have it.

Oooh K. I absolutely agree with you. I don't think many people in by 1990 would have had the attention span to watch that at the beginning of that film.

I don't have much good to say about GFIII, but must add that showing the montage of scenes from GF and GFII was the perfect way to open the film. Memories of Michael Corleone's past come flooding back to us as we sit back & prepare for the fast-forward to 1979. Perhaps it was thought of as a last resort when the opening described here was scratched, but it sure worked for me!

Yeesh, I think it was my favorite part of the movie!!!

Well, you're right about that, a stunning piece of work by Pacino. So I guess that means my favorite parts are the beginning...and the end. All the rest I could live without!

Ok, that montage of both the first and second films...was that in the movie originally? I don't think it was, because I didn't see it on the DVD version. I did see it when I saw the movie on USA. I do like how they did that, and I kind of miss it on the DVD.

According to IMDB, the alternate opening was with Michael sitting on a bench in sunglasses etc while the credits overlayed:
