Is Part 2 really that much longer than Part 1 and 3? I thought that a DVD can fit a very large amount of data...why 2 discs?

The Paramount explanation was that to fit it all on one disc they'd have had to use a special process that would have taken longer to produce. Supposedly there are only 2 production houses in the world that do that technique, and Paramount wanted the release date to be the same or close to that of North America, so they went with two discs.

While it seems like it should be able to fit, don't forget there's the dolby 5.1 audio and the commentary track that take up extra space, too.

At first I was annoyed that it was on two discs, but it didn't bother me when I had to actually swap discs. Recall that we always had to swap tapes before, for all three films, and even more for laser discs, so I think we've gotten a bonus with GF1 and GF3 on one disc.

Right this is a question about 5.1 audio.

As far as I thought of 5.1, it's surround sound, like stereo but from 5 points instead of two, each point holding it's own particular range of frequency's and real sound image. Now to me that makes sense but what about the .1. What difference does that make?

The 1 is for the subwoofer grin

I don't know why they use "5.1" -- it's not "five and one-tenth" but "five speakers (front left/right, rear left/right, and front center) + a subwoofer"

But whatever they call it, it sounds great!

(I think they started 6.1 now, though, with a rear center channel. Great, right after I get my 5.1 system. But I haven't seen any discs yet using 6.1 so I don't care...)

Yeah I know it does sound great. I havn't got 5.1 myself but at the studio where we've been working on our latest demo, the guy who runs it has and it's quite scary to close your eyes sometimes with all the surround sounds.

Yeh, I was bummed out too about the 2 discs, but o well. frown But it does give you a chance to get up and take a leak and get some snacks if you're watching all three straight through (Which I did this weekend, by the way)

I read somewhere that the original release of GFII had an intermission in the spot where we now have to change discs. Is this true?

Also, why not just make it a double sided disc instead of two DVDs? Just curious.

I believe those disks are dual layered already. It doesn't require flipping of the disks but both sides are being used.

Does this mean it can't be double sided as well? I know I've seen disks which require flipping to play side 2 (not layer 2).

I think the discs are dual layered, as I was watching The Godfather DVD the other day, and noticed the frame freeze for about 1/2 a second while it flipped layers...

Anyway, the real reason why GF2 is on two discs, is because FFC wanted to put both Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro on the boxset, so he put it on two discs...

Thats a true story...

Just buy an multi disc dvd player, that solves
the problem. You won't have to even move to change the disc 2. I know we are sooooooo spoiled. wink

If it was a double sided disc then GF2 would be the only disc out of the set that doesn't have art on it.
