I'll probably get eaten alive by hardcore fans for asking this, but....is the Sopranos any good?
I've never watched a single episode, but they seemed to be held in quite high esteem. What's it like, anything at all like The Godfather? I'm thinking of hiring it out or something, should I watch it from the first series, or are the episodes unrelated, and I can watch it from anywhere?

Nawwww...the only thing stuuuuupid is not posting it in the Sopranos section. Just kidding. I don't have HBO, but I have caught a couple episodes of this. What I've seen were good. Don't know if I would pay extra for HBO just for the series. It does seem to follow week after week, so if you want to keep up make Tony Soprano happy and buy the dvd beginning with Season 1. :p

I’ve been watching the Sopranos for a while now (about two years). I’ve seen the entire last season and it’s great storytelling to say the least. But it’s one of those shows that you gotta watch from the first episode to the last one to truly get into it and become a fan. It’s not like the Godfather but there are some similarities here and there. It’s just a modern mafia. The name “Godfather” is rarely used but in the first few episodes it was. If I where you I’d get the first season on DVD like I’m going to do, I hear it’s great.

Give that lady a ceeegar. Researcher, I'm transferring this thread to "The Sopranos" forum.

I'd also recommend you starting with Season 1. Its a great show (probably the best drama on American tv now), and its easy to "get into".

Researcher,

I don't know of anyone who has seen the Sopranos who doesn't like it. I rented seasons 1 - 3 before I finally got HBO, only for The Sopranos. After the 1st or maybe 2nd I was hooked!!

I agree also with Edie Falco's performance, truly a great one! She did win an emmy a few months ago, but I believe it was for season 3.

Capo,

I hope you are recovering from the season finale!!! (you really had me wondering what you were talking about with that pm my friend!! )

I'm a baritone and personally I think the sopranos are over rated. They always get to sing the melody, the high part, they are the one everyone hears. The tenors too. Always getting the glory. Now the male baritones and the female altos, well we have the toughest parts. Singing the low parts, counter melody, all that. We make the sopranos and tenors sound good. Without us they would just be screeching noise.

Now the Sopranos - best thing on TV. I've got all 3 DVDs and waiting for season 4 DVD. Best actors, script, etc. Jump on it.

Sopranos = best.show.ever.

I was a big GF fan, and I was at my local Best Buy back in November 2001. Season 2 had just come out on DVD, and they had a deal where if you bought both seasons, you got a discount. I was feeling rich that day, so I bought them both hoping that I would like the show. Because they called the show "The Sopranos," I didn't think it would be so true-to-life, but it was. I watched the first 13 episodes in a day, and I watched season 2 within a few more days. It's a hell of a show. I would say that it's more like GoodFellas than Godfather. GO OUT AND WATCH THIS SHOW NOW!

Researcher, I can not recommend it enough! Start with season one though without a doubt. It is no good to try and catch up by watching it "backwards." Let us all know what you think if and when you get season one, okay?

I've only ever seen bits of the Sopranos, but with the recommendation of Capo, I've ordered series one on DVD.

It's a new version of the boxset with extra extras(!) that is due out on August 1st, so I have to wait. That said it was a steal @ £33 so I'm happy to wait! (I'm also on holiday for two weeks during that time so it won't feel as long).

After reading some of the posts here, I'm looking forward to seeing what all the fuss is about!

Where did you order this "new" set at that price as a matter of interest?

I've only borrowed the box sets up to this point but would not mind getting a copy of my own.

Sopranos Series One Boxset £32.99

Might be cheaper because it's fullscreen and not widescreen version?

Not a bad price at all..........

I've seen that cover artwork before somewhere, though it is different to the "previous" series one box set release.

The extras look the same as the existing release, just the price tag seems to have come down quite a bit!
