I read, on JGeoff's site, that the GF trilogy will be widescreen. Were they each filmed in widescreen? If not, will there be an option to have a 4:3 version of the movie?
I borrowed a DVD player about 4 years ago and some of the discs had widescreen on one side and pan/scan on the other. I wonder why they don't do that anymore?

The first film was shot in 35mm full frame and not in widescreen. The cinematographer Gordon Willis shot the film accordingly so that it would look great in normal and widescreen. The DVD version of GF1 will be a cropped down version of the full-frame standard version which is a bit of a let down as widescreen usually contains more footage...
