Will Winegardner write The Godfather 4?
Posted on Tue, 23-Nov-2004

Paramount have been planning to get a "Godfather 4" off the ground for a couple of years now, but they ultimatelty waited for the release of the recent book "The Godfather Returns" for inspiration. Whether they're going to get it or not is another question : the book, from writer Mark Winegardner, is getting some pretty mixed reviews. But then, how does one compete with the golden touch of Puzo anyway? Heck, those that do like it, probably don't want to whack their hand up and admit it.

Winegardner won't be the man responsible for penning the fourth chapter in the film series. He's leaving his involvement at the book.

"Movies are such a collaborative process," he said. "If you're a screenwriter, it's like being a plumber. I'd rather remain a novelist, where you're in control of everything. You're the director; you're the actors; you're God. Who wants to relinquish the role of God?", he tells tallahassee.com.

"The Godfather Returns" sees Michael ignoring an understanding with the Chicago mob and moves his family's interests westward to take control of Lake Tahoe, where he believes the family can someday become legitimate. Fredo, Tom Hagen and Johnny Fontane are key support characters.

Interestingly, plans for the film version of "Godfather 4" originally included Andy Garcia, who would reprise his role from the third film as Vincent Mancini. If Paramount does decide to use "The Godfather Returns" for the basis of its next movie - and it just may, it opens up some interesting casting possibilities - it's likely that Garcia and anyone else associated post-Godfather II, since it would be a prequel, would no longer be required.

At one stage, there were rumours that it might film in Melbourne, Australia.

What have I been telling you guys, what have I been fucking telling you?! I can only hope the winegardener novel(if you can call it a novel) wont be used. Hollywood, when will they learn

i did get this from a pretty credible website. but it is worrying me a bit. if puzo did have an outline for part four, why would they be looking for someone to write a new one?

hey if they smell money the don't give a shit that they might spoil a great trilogy. it's a shame. i did at one point want a part four. but not one that would resemble the godfather returns.

O fcourse we will. Because we all hang on that impossible hope that it may actually be decent, when in all reality we know it will be the worst thing we've ever seen (much like "Returns")

As it stands now, "The Godfather Returns" could really only be used as "flashback" scenes, since it mainly takes place in between I-II, and in between II-III (shortly after II).

Some of the biggest questions left by the "canonical" GF materials (i.e. GFI-II-II and the Puzo novel) are not even touched on in GFR.

GFR also makes almost no reference to any of the main characters and events of GF III.

If a GFIV is made, it would have to be primarily based on Puzo's existing script ideas, with perhaps some passages from GFR thrown in as flashback sequences.

forget that, there should be nothing in here from the godfather returns. any flashbacks i want to see are with vito. anything else would really just ruin the godfather. i think that is why part three suffered a bit. we didn't have vito there for us to admire.

Vito wasn't in Part II, either, and that one was "pretty good"... :p

I studied Italian for 2 semesters. Not once was a "C" pronounced as a "G", and never was a trailing "I" ignored! And I'm from Jersey! tongue lol

De Niro was in the second one?

Talk about equating Vito w/ Brando - wow - total mind shutdown!

(But at least I got another post in here for my post count! )
