GF IV ... It is 1988.

The Justice Department is coming down hard on the Corleone Family, and Vincent may stand trial on federal racketeering charges and Michael could be dragged into the mess as well.

Chief Defense Attorney Anthony Corleone is conferring with his father, Michael, in a library at Michael's Manhattan apartment.

ANTHONY: "Dad, I got a call from someone the other day who says he may be able to help us in this trial."

MICHAEL: "Oh, really? Did he sound serious?"

ANTHONY: "Yes. Very serious. He said he would be here today to meet with us. He said circumstances have made it necessary to leave the place where he's been living the last 18 years. He says he knows the best thing he can do now is help us out."

The door buzzes. Michael hits the intercom button.

MICHAEL: "Who is it, Al?"

AL NERI (on speaker): "It's someone you probably ought to see, Mike."

ANTHONY: "OK, send him in, if he checks out clean."

The door opens....

"You did good."

One problem, he was already dead in 1979 in GF3 which would most likely make him still dead in 1988.

that man on the foto is Robert Duvall isn't it?
Tom Hagen died in the '70-s..at least that's wat the family-tree told us..but it was never mentioned in the movie..so it could happen

Everybody THINKS he's dead - but who knows if he didn't go in a Witness Protection Program - or maybe just went underground to hide from the Feds?

The dyed hair and mustache and shades would be a nice touch..

MICHAEL: Madonn' .. Tom, I wouldn't have recognized you...

HAGEN: Well, that was sort of the idea, Michael...

In GF III it is mentioned briefly that Hagen passed away.

And it's a pic of Duvall from his movie "Assassination Tango."

Haha, sure why not! If GF3 can bring back random characters, why not 4

I'm actually half-serious here:

Say Michael knew that Tom went "undercover," but the reason he really did it wasn't the reason Michael thought it was?

Tom chafed under Sonny as the Don because he thought Sonny was too wild and unpredictable - how would he react to find that Sonny's son Vincent, if anything even more hotheaded than Sonny, was now in charge?

And since he himself had been the consigliere, the "guiding force" behind the family, the "voice of wisdom" dating back to Vito, how would he react to the fact that in effect Connie had now assumed that role?

Sure, Tom spending 18-20 years in hiding and then just deciding to return one day would seem a litle far-fetched, but certainly no more so than an unheard-of bastard son of Sonny just appearing out of nowhere....

I really think it's a great idea. It's the perfect opportunity to bring back a much loved character. Robert Duvall is still a great actor and it's obvious he was sorely missed in GF III. It would explain why Michael never expanded on his "His father died" comment. I never did get why he was so vague about Tom's death. Maybe it was just to keep people from asking too many questions. It would also prolong Michael's idea to keep Tom out of danger from the FBI or whomever. He would need him so that's why he was "out" Tom could always say that Michael knew that after his death the next Don would sorely need Tom's help in Michael's quest to become legit.
But I do have two problems with it. First of all, I doubt that if he went into hiding he would just leave his wife and children. Ater Don Vito teaching his boys the importance of family I don't believe Tom would just abandom them like that. And second of all....He is not nearly as hot as he used to be!

Heheh. Well, being a guy I can't judge how hot Duvall is ... :p

But if we assume Tom "went underground" around 1970, all his kids would have been grown, or nearly so, by that time. (His twin daughters would be almost 30 and Andrew in his late teens by then.)

And I would also figure if Tom went undercover with the knowledge and consent of the Corleone Family, that arrangements would have been made that his family would have been taken care of during his absence.

Twin daughters? I don't think Tom had any twin daughters. Those were Sonny's kids. Anyway, I think GF4 should be more about the years between 1927-1941. I'm not all for the modern years. I wanna see how the Corleone empire grew, and how they became the most powerful Family. They're gonna have to get a great actor to play Vito. Robert De Niro is too old to play that character. He's like 60 or 61. Even if they try to make him look younger, I don't think it would work. Let's see if they'll bother to make another GF.

Yeah, I think most people would rather see the early years rather then a modern godfather. I think that RD would be awsome to play a oung Vito, if made to look a little younger. I think the movie should have flashbacks like gf2 with the modern days be based around michael and his son. I think Anthony should join the family, in revenge for his sister, just like Michael did in revenge for his father. Michael does not want him to do this, unlike his Vito to Michael. Now I think that has some potential for a great ending. However, Puzo is dead and so is the godfather, sad to say.
