This should probably be in the trivia thread but I would like to see more than one response!

Q: Since Michael became head of the family in GFI until the end of GFII he had not much time for smiling. He smiled only on three occasions. What were they?!

Good question Accardo!

1) In Sicily when he smiled at Appollonia after she opened his gift.

2) When Anthony drew him the picture

3) When Sonny's daughter's boyfriend asked Michael for permission to marry his neice. (I think a vague smile no??)

OK your first one was before he was Don: eliminated. Your third one was from GFIII (I hope): eliminated
The second one Im not too sure about. I don't think he smiled but if he did, then its 4 cases.

The third one was from a deleted scene in Part II.

Good observation grin . Didnt he have some sort of smirk on his face when he was setting up Carlo? lol

He smiled for the camera when he posed for the picture of the presentation of the check, with Kay and Sen. and Mrs. Geary.

Did he sort of smile when he was dancing with Kaye talking about the "baby inside her" at the communion party?

Also, when they were passing around the cake at Roth's, I think he smurked or something.

OK I'm back!

So far, I think only one person has got one of the three. That was The Ant who saw him smiling in Havanna. He smiled after Fredo wanted to know how to say Bannana Daquiri in Italian.

Deleted scenes are not allowed (thats why they are deleted smile )

Thing is, I dont think he smiled for the presentation at all. Have another look!

He definitely didn't smile when dancing with Kay!

Everything with Carlo was dead serious. Definitely no smiling there!

Can anyone tell me the other two???

He smiles when Roth says "Ah the doctors would disagree, but what do they know?"

Alberto, I didn't know he smiled then. If he did then we're up to 4!

I won't be able to post again until January the 5th so I feel I should give u the answers now. You'll kick yourselves when u hear them.

The other two smiling scenes were:

2) At Roths house when he tell Michael about how Arnold Rothstein fixed the World series back in 1919!

3) In GFI (which no-one seemed to want to think about!) when he is talking with 'Pop' about how his son is reading the funny papers! Remember he was head of the family at this point.

Happy Christmas to u all!

Accardo, I think there is going to be more than three. I'll give you another: When he comes to Vegas in GF and asks Johnny Fontaine to sign a contract to sing at the hotels. edit: [oops, I think the Don is still alive at that point]edit the edit, the Don is alive, but Michael has been given control, so is he officially the Don? I think so.

I'll have to look closely, but after the Baptism outside the church there might be a little smile when he tells Kay that something has come up.

I think he smiles at Anthony when he's tucking him in.

OKay you GF fans. Your homework assignment over the holidays is to find as many smiles on the face of Michael Corleone in GF and GF2 ONLY after he becomes Godfather. At the wedding in GF he smiles at Kay and asks her how she likes her lasagna - doesn't count. He wasn't Godfather yet. I will give you nine possibilities. Please verify all of these and look for others. Accardo says there are only 3.

In "The Godfather"
1. When Michael goes to Vegas and asks Johnny Fontaine to sign a contract to sing.
2. In the garden with Vito when they talk about Anthony reading the Funny Papers.
3. After the Baptism on the steps of the church, Mike tells Kay something's come up (look close for this one.)

In "The Godfather Part II"
4. Taking a picture with Geary at the Communion
5. Having a drink with Fredo in Cuba
6. At the "show" in Cuba when Geary wants to meet "one of those Yolandas."
7. Dancing with Kay after the Communion
8. in Anthony's bedroom
9. with Roth when discussing the money on the table and doctors.

The thing is with Michael, he never gives a full smile, you know, a teethy smile so to speak. Maybe at the wedding when he was talking to Kay, or while Christmas shopping (both before he was Don). Otherwise, for Michael, the slightest curve of the lips is a smile, don't you think? ohwell He just isn't a character that is prone to smiling, rightfully so, I believe.

Right, TIS, he didnt smile at all in GFII. On my way to sleep last nite, I caught a piece of ( I think ) Angels in America with Al Pacino..I now I think I get Geoff's point...they were saying something about (The doctor) he had veneral warts in his rectum...beasically calling Al's character a homosexual..it was kind of a shock seeing Al portly with gray hair playing a gay role. Hi guys Im back!
I got the DVD collection there for christmas and I realise there are a few more smiling moments in the films (although the three I mentioned are still the most memorable)!

MaryCas:

1. I think u cud be right here but Im not sure, need another look

2. Got that

3. He tells Carlo somethings come up not Kay right?!

4. No as Ive said before, Im almost sure he doesn't smile here!

5. Got that

6. YES!!! This is a big one I missed previously!

7-9 Im not sure about but I think you'll find that one or more are wrong (or arguable).

There are also some more I remember when I watched it but I can't recall now.

p.s. MaryCas - u forgot one of the biggest smiles with Roth at his house!

Yea I agree with you on this one. For some strange reason (haven't figured out why yet)I didn't like him in this character. Didn't much care for the movie either frown

I thought Michael gave a slight, 'Hello, how are you' smile to Carlo when Sonny was introducing Carlo to the family at the end of GF2 ...
