The movie A Bronx Tale was based on a true story (Chazz Palminteri's, right?). So on who was Sonny based? Wich family operate in the Fordham Section of the Bronx?

Good question. Four of the 5 Families operated in The Bronx during the 50's and 60's when Palminteri would've been growing up there (the Profaci's didn't).

The Arthur Avenue/Belmont/Fordham section was the borough's largest Italian neighborhood and I suspect all four of those Families had a piece of the action there. IF I had to choose one I'd say it was the Gambinos (underboss Frank Scalise was gunned down there while buying fruit, just like Vito Corleone, in 1957).

I couldn't even guess who the "real" Sonny was.

You know, as SC said, this really was a good question. A very good one! Since you posted I've been going crazy doing searches and such to see if I could find any hint of who Sonny was based on. Nothing! It's now driving me nuts.

Next step is to somehow get the question to Chazz.

Yeah this is pissing me off too lol the only thing I've found is that Chazz's real name is Colagero. And that he'd be 9 in 1961.....ok back to the case lol

Calogero, actually.

And what do you think the position of the real Sonny was, in one of the Four Families?
Caporegime, maybe?

The character of Sonny was called "Little Johnny" (and supposedly based on someone by that name) in Palminteri's play (on which the movie is based).

Who "Little Johnny" was is a mystery.

I think he was a caporegime. Calogero mentioned that Sonny became a boss, but i think thats not true.

I had no idea A Bronx Tale was based on a true story.

As far as "Sonny's" position in his family, which ever it was, Calagero at one point refers to him as "becoming a boss." Just the fact that he says "a boss" instead of "the boss" makes me think he is referring to boss of the neighborhood, as in a capo, not a real boss. So he was probably a capo.

I dream in widescreen.
