Actually, I believe he says s'fortunato, not "sweet tonato". S'fortunato, I think, means unfortunate or something close to that, meaning that it's unfortunate it's the wedding day of the Don's daughter, or else Paulie would probably try to steal the money. Incidently, I feel that scene showcases Paulie's character (i.e. that he's a scumbag); if it wasn't the wedding of a powerful person's child he would try to steal the bridal purse and leave the bride and groom with nothing. That's almost as bad as stealing money from the collection plate at church!
