Retired wiseguy teaches punks a lesson

My parents taught me that we treat other people like ladies and gentleman not because they are, but because we are.

A trio of young toughs learned that lesson the hardway Wednesday when they tangled with retired wiseguy Johnny Spinoza at a New York diner near Coney Island Avenue and Avenue U in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn.

One of the men is still in the hospital with a broken nose and other head injuries, another has a broken arm and the third man suffered cuts and contusions after they got in an altercation with a man who used to knock heads for Socks Lanza on the New York waterfront and who survived the jungles of Burma with Merrill's Marauders in World War II.

Disclosure Note: Spinoza is a friend of mine and I got the details of this dispute from his family.

Another note: Spinoza is in his mid 90s. The three guidos who flipped him off together total about 90 years.

The fight occurred in the parking lot of the Tiffany Diner, a spot popular with wiseguys because it is neutral territory. The Tiffany Diner and its owners are not connected with organized crime, the restaurant just serves as a meeting place.

Johnny's son, a criminal defense lawyer said his father had a bail hearing set for Thursday noonish and that noted New York bailbonds firm Al Newman was standing by in case the judge required a bail.

Spinoza was charged with felonious assault.

The arrest marks the latest for the tough Spinoza, whose first collar was back in 1928 when he was nabbed alongside Dutch Schultz on a Volstead Act violation. Three different names connected to Spinoza's fingerprints came back with police records, including one which listed his last name as Carfano, the same last name used by Augie Pisano on occasion.

It also says in a different article that he is out on bail. Im glad he didnt get in too much trouble. Those young punks probably deserved it!

Why do you assume that the young punks deserved it? And what makes you glad that he didn't get in more trouble?

I must disagree, these punk kids nowadays deserve to be slapped around. They have no respect for anything. They thought they could get away with insulting even an old man. I'm glad he did a number on them.

I agree - to a point. Youth today are far too often disrespectful. I would never dream of disrespecting my elders, but we also must live with the fact that it will happen in today's society.

But where I disagree with you is that the original poster was happy that the old man didn't get reprimanded more heavily. I feel that looking up to these mafiosi is wrong, dispite how honorable Hollywood makes them out to be. He beat up 3 kids. Had they gotten the best of him, they would certainly be spending a bit of time behind bars.

I'm relaxed, friend. I just don't like the fact that people look up to the mafia. I mean, I love the Corleones because they are fictional. But I would never say one good thing about a real mafioso. Think of what they do!

Youre completly right about people looking up to the mafia. I LOVE the godfather and the sopranos but real mobsters are much different than Vito.

I would LOVE to see that fight! If somebody told me this story with no proof, I wouldn't believe them.

I enjoyed reading this story, differently than HH. Everything Hollywood said was 100% correct.

I just got a Kick out of an "old guy" over 90 years old, for pete's sake, teaching the disrespectful punks a lesson, unless of course it was a mob "beef". Then, the story wouldn't strike my fancy.

I know a Puerto Rican ex-boxer turned Pastor of a church in the South Bronx (Prospect and Westchester Aves.) who was 76 years old and was mugged from behind with a knife and a big man attached to the knife. The old guy (and this was around 1974 when the age of 76 was old ) proceeded the flip the guy , stomp him, take the knife and told the guy as he was kicking "I forgive you but don't ever come back unless you're coming to church!" This is as they say " a true story".

You gotta laugh.
