Today's NYTimes has a story about Michael D'Urso, another former Mafia guy (Genovese Family) turned government informant, whose information "has led to more than 50 arrests and many guilty pleas." He may testify in the Peter Gotti and Chin Gigante trials.
What caught my eye was this paragraph: "Prosecutors have described Mr. D'Urso as one of their current stars. He pleaded guilty to taking part in a murder himself as part of a deal under which he wore a recording device in a Rolex watch and captured hundreds of conversations from 1998 to 2001."
Paisani: a tape recorder in a Rolex? Do you think dear old Q has deserted MI5 for America, leaving James Bond to fend for himself? Will you ever trust a Rolex wearer again? And what was our poor, cash-strapped government doing by wiring up Rolexes in the first place? Next time my Congressman tells me they gotta raise taxes to offset a budget deficit, I'm gonna tell him to make the FBI start buying Timex watches!

That sounds like exactly like something from a James Bond movie! He probably had a telephone in his shoe too. Goes to show you...never underestimate the Federal Government!

You mean in exchange for his "assistance" to the feds, he actually got away with murder??? I suppose I'd sing like a canary too!!!

Update: The judge in the Peter Gotti trial ruled that D'Urso cannot testify against Gotti. Prosecutors regard this as a serious, perhaps fatal, setback to their case.

Turnbull,

Did the judge say "why" he couldn't tesify? And does this mean he himself can be prosecuted for murder now?? Yea, sounds like a pretty serious setback to me.

TIS, according to the NYTimes: "After excusing the jury and hearing the proposed testimony from Mr. D'Urso, Judge Block said he had concluded that among other things, Mr. D'Urso's knowledge of the events at the center of the Gotti case was too remote. "It's not close enough, it's just too general," said Judge Block as he ruled on the defense motion to bar Mr. D'Urso's testimony as hearsay and irrelevant.
