Nothing comes to mind straight away sorry. But be prepared for the Gotti bashings that must soon arise in this thread.

I did however watch one of those reality tv shows the other night something along the lines of "worlds dumbest criminals" and you see on the security cameras after failing to rob a bank on his escape he can't open the door on the way out. He tries and tries but it just wont open. So he gives up. Anyway an old lady comes walking straight in a few minutes later. The idiot robber had been trying to open the door the wrong way.

Now that i've written that I realise there's loads of dumb gangsters. Alot of the criterea comes down to talking to much and/or having a short temperament.

Hi,
I would have to say John Gotti. He wasn't dumb however, just talked too much. He forgot the basic rule of, "This thing of ours is SECRET." Too much publicity.

I think you have to differentiate the dumbest gangster with those that did the dumbest things. Capone was a great organizer that was able to generate hundreds of millions of dollars back n the 1920's. A ruthless, street smart mob boss that successfully fought off his rivals. But one of the dumbest things he did was fail to file income taxes. Unable to intimidate the judge and jury, he goes to prison and dies insane from untreated syphlis.

Yes, add Gotti to the list. Good soldier, capo, enforcer, but a dumb boss. Castellano: good businessman, but allowed the FBI to actually enter his home and bug his kitchen.

The smart ones are the Gambinos and Bonnanos - the one's that died of natural causes.

"After all, we are not communists"

Christopher Moltisanti: You ever think what a coincidence it is that Lou Gehrig died of Lou Gehrig's disease?

Tony Soprano: Yeah well, when you're married, you'll understand the importance of fresh produce.

John Gotti is the dumbest Gangster he helped bring down the mob.

Leonard: I dont know. See, I have this condition.
Teddy: Well, I hope its not as serious as his, 'cos this guy's dead.

Calm down, I was actually just about to mention you . Yeah, Henry Hill and the wiseguys, no matter how accurate or not accurate those films are, you know that they were stupid with money, and apparentely didn't enforce properly, desbite their sometimes not so intelligent whackings. Henry Hill , from my perspective, screwed everything with two (or more) legs, snorted anything that came accross the border, and inadvertentely just opened the exit door of his paradise life wide open. Now, with all his popularity, he's bragging about it! My favorite episode of The Sopranoes so far is where the enemy who was kicked out of WPP gets whacked! Jimmy and Paulie may be gone, but I'd learn to put a hand;e on my mouth. Better late then never .

Well, Gotti, Jr. Gotti and Henry Hill are right up there. But my vote would go to Gaspar diGregorio, Joe Bonanno's second in command, who sold out to Stefano Magaddino, Bonanno's estranged cousin, during the Banana Wars of the mid-'60's. Not only was that an el-dumbo move, but diGregorio pulled a grade-A estupido earlier:
Bonanno had the good sense to stay away from the famous and ill-starred Apalachin, NY convention in 1957. He sent diGregorio in his place. But earlier that year, Bonanno had gone to Italy for a long vacation. Before he left, he gave his driver's license to diGregorio to be renewed. Gaspar stuck it in his wallet and forgot all about it. When the cops raided Apalachin and pinched diGregorio, they lifted his wallet--and Bonanno's license. That's how Bonanno, who wasn't even there, was "identified" as one of the top crime bosses in America--previously he'd been known as a dress manufacturer and a cheesemaker! Gaspar must have been the model for the joke about the guy who was drummed out of the Mafia for stupidity: they sent him to blow up a car, he burned his lips on the tailpipe.

Yeah, i always thought when watching Goodfella's, that if he hadn't gotten into drugs then Paulie obviously wouldn't have deserted henry hill, it was his own fault really. If he hadn't gotten into drugs he wouldn't have watered down ketchup as marinara sauce.

I always thought Sammy the Bull was supposed to be a clever guy. He made lots of money with construction and stuff, wanted to keep things quiet etc. Then after being thrown a second chance, ie getting five years in jail for 19 murders, he starts trafficking, or whatever he was doing, ecstacy and goes down for 20 years. I thought that was dumb.

The demise of wise guys like Henry Hill or Tony Montana (fictional) can be pointed directly to drugs. They werent necessarily stupid, just let their drug addictions get the best of them.

A guy named Gus Farace. I don't know if he was a "gangster" or just an associate of some family, but during a meeting regarding a drug deal he supposedly decides the guy is an informant and kills him. Turns out the guy IS actually a cop (or an FBI agent, don't remember which).

The guy goes into hiding, even makes Americas Most Wanted TV show and it ends up that the Mob actually kills him to get the heat off of them for the cop being killed.

And 2nd Prize goes to that guy from "Casino", what was his name Nicky, who after all that crap he pulled being dumb enough to go to a meeting in the middle of a remote farm field and never coming out!!

There is a really great book called "The Darwin Awards", I'm not too sure about why they came up with that title but it has something to do with dumb people getting themselves killed and removing their "stupid" genes from the human gene pool! It has true case stories in it like about the people who will light a match to see if the gasoline can has any gas in it and stuff like that, sad but funny stuff. If I remember right they have a website also.

We get a programme here called 'Americas dumbest Criminals' it is hilarious, some of them are so thick it has to be seen to be believed.
I'm sure some of the Brit criminals could rival them in the 'thick head' department too. A low IQ seems to be a requisite of being a crook in a lot of cases. The bright guys are all lawyers stealing money with brain not brawn

I agree with Don Palentinos post tho, that Gotti was the dumbest, he did help bring down the mob

That's a good one, FH! We Yanks should retaliate with "The UK's dumbest criminals." I nominate Fat Reg and Jack the Hat.

Wasn't Sal Tessio loosely based upon DiGreggorio because he sold out Bill Bonnano while the other capo(don't remmber names but he loosely influented Clemenza)stood loyal?
The one of the tailpipe was great

I've always believed that Vito Corleone was a composite of Frank Costello, Salvatore Maranzano, Joe Profaci--and Joe Bonanno, because of the similarity between Tessio and DiGregorio, as well as the fact that both Vito and Bonanno were grooming their sons as successors.
