St. Valentine’s Day Massacre was a mass execution orchestrated by Al Capone on the key men of the rival gang from Chicago. The warfare between Al Capone (Scarface) and George Moran (Bugs) was ongoing and well known to the Chicago police but when the authorities arrived at the crime scene of what would be forever known as the Valentine’s Day Massacre, they were a bit puzzled.

Seven dead bodies discovered inside the S.M.C Cartage Co. garage located at 2122 North Clark Street belonged to the mobsters from the Bugs Moran gang but they all seemed to have been shot with machine guns from their backs while being lined up against the wall. These were mobsters who were not only well armed with endless supply of latest firepower, but also henchmen well used to killing other people. So why would they all stand up facing the wall so their enemies could execute them from behind without any form of resistance?

Two women (Jeanette Landesman and Alphonse Morin) living across the street from the garage where the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre took place talked to the police about what they saw happened on February 14, 1929. They said they heard a slew of bullets fired by machine guns and looked outside their window which directly faced the garage at 2122 Clark Street in North Chicago to see two policemen walk out of the garage escorting two casually dressed men who held their hands above their heads as if they were under arrest.

Having been previously spooked by the gunfire, the women felt comforted by the sight of the police leading out the gangsters, however upon talking to the authorities, they learned that none of the police had any activity at that address prior to the massacre so it could not have been any of their men who were seen by the eyewitness.

There was no doubt that the Valentine’s Day Massacre was orchestrated by Al Capone. Needless to say, he secured himself with an alibi by being in Florida where he had the talks with another investigator lined up on the day the massacre took place, but it didn’t take a genius to figure out that it was him who made top orders.

The objective was to kill Bugs Moran and the killers believed they got him, because he was supposed to be at the location, but as he was arriving, Bugs noticed fake police cars and decided to pull back and figure out what was going on.

Al Capone’s reign over Chicago was spreading. Thanks to prohibition, he was able to accumulate the riches exceeding $60 Million by running gambling, prostitution and bootlegging operations but as his riches grew, so did his greed and the desire to get rid of the rival Chicago gangs.

When the bodies of seven Moran gangsters were discovered, the crime scene was a bloodbath. It appeared that no one could have survived such attack but miraculously, despite being shot several times (had 14 slugs in his body), the body of Frank Gusenberg was still moving. He was choking on his own blood, but was still alive.

Sgt. Thomas J. Loftus, one of the leading investigators went to talk to Dr. Frank Gusenberg to find out what happened, but the doctor refused to talk. Frank Gusenberg knew who Sgt. Loftus was, but when asked about the massacre, he responded by firm “I won’t talk.”

Frank Gusenberg was taken to the Alexian Brothers Hospital where he died 3 hours later. He didn’t tell Sgt. Loftus anything, but with his last words, he confirmed that it was the men in police uniforms who lined them against the wall and opened fire.

The police had to start pasting bits and pieces of information and evidence they had to come to a full story which went something like this:

Two men dressed in police uniforms entered the garage where five Moran mobsters, one auto mechanic and an optometrist who enjoyed killing his spare time by hanging out with the gangsters were present at the time. The Moran people thought it was a regular police sting so they decided to co-operate with the authorities and allowed them to have themselves disarmed and lined against the wall. They would not otherwise allow to have themselves killed without a fight.

Once all seven men were facing the bricks, two other men in plain clothes entered the garage and shot them all down. Afterwards, so as not to cause too much panic among the people living in the neighborhood, the policemen walked out looking as if they had just arrested two men. Believing that everything was under control, despite rapid gunfire that could have been heard just seconds before, none of the neighbors ran to the telephone to call the police, allowing the gangsters to safely depart.

Al Capone has never confessed to being the man behind the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. He was never arrested for this or any other gang related crime and had never made a heart breaking tell-all confession prior to his passing. Instead, he was arrested on tax evasion charges a few years later and spent seven years in jail before being released to retire in Florida where he died from syphilis in 1947.

To keep the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre mystery even more interesting, none of the gunmen were identified either. The only thing we know is the confession from Al Capone’s fellow “associate” who confirmed that Scarface told him about his intentions to take down George Moran. The associate told Al Capone that in order to get to Bugs Moran, he would have to kill many people to which Al Capone allegedly replied by saying: “I’ll send flowers.”

Later investigation into the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre revealed that the deed was planned out by Jack McGurn, member of the Circus Gang (Al Capone’s satellite gang) who allegedly brought in killers for hire from St. Louis to carry out the massacre. It is believed that as many as 14 people may have been involved in the process.

Capone didn't plan or order the massacre. McGurn wanted it in revenge for having almost been killed by the Gusenberg brothers (and Frank wasn't a "doctor") in a phone booth. Capone agreed to it and fronted money to McGurn to set it up. McGurn and his girlfriend, Louise Rolfe, checked into a hotel on the day of the massacre, kept ordering room service and asking the front desk for the time in order to establish an alibi (she was called "the Blond Alibi"). McGurn later married her so that she couldn't be forced to testify against him. Laurence Bergreen, Capone's most recent biographer, says the killers were Fred (Killer) Burke of the Circus gang (McGurn wasn't in that gang, he was Capone's chief bodyguard), Patsy Lolordo, Albert Anselmi and John Scalise. The brouhaha and law enforcement crackdown caused by the massacre soured Capone on McGurn, who lost favor with his boss. McGurn was gunned down several years later in a bowling alley.
