It's been announced that Didi Gregorius needs Tommy John surgery. He felt something in his elbow at Fenway Park when making a relay throw during the ALDS. Boone hopes he could return in time “to play the bulk of the season with us,” and Brian Cashman suggested a “summer” return for Gregorius is possible. So does this mean the Yankees go hard after Machado due to Didi's uncertainty?

Also, the Yankees are actively going to shop Sonny Gray this offseason. Per Cashman, “We’re entering the winter open-minded to relocation.” “It’s probably best to try somewhere else.” Wow, not mincing words there.

Rumor is the Indians might make Carlos Carrasco and/or Corey Kluber available. The Yankees would be interested if they're available but I'm wondering what kind of haul Cleveland would look to get in return? Carrasco is under contract for 2019 and has a team option for 2020 as well. Kluber's the same however he has team options for 2020 and 2021. While I'd love to see the Yankees get either (or both) again, it depends on what they'd have to give up.

Jimmy Butler got traded to the 76ers. Minnesota was smart and sent him out East. I wonder if Jimmy will re-up with them or if he'll strictly be a rental? Not sure if this improves their chances in the East though as Toronto seems to be in firm control so far in the early portion of the season.

So awards season has started. On Monday Shohei Ohtani won the AL ROY while Ronald Acuna Jr. won in the NL. I'm not surprised Ohtani won but I don't agree with it. Yes, for the sample size we had where he was a 2 way player, he was surpassing expectations. However, due to the number of games he missed due to injury and Andujar's better overall numbers, I felt he (Andujar) deserved to win it. Had Torres remained healthy, I thought he would have bested Anduar's numbers personally.

Bob Melvin won Coach of the Year for the AL and Brian Snitker won in the NL. I'm a little surprised by both as I thought Alex Cora and Craig Counsell would have won in their leagues. A case could easily be made for all 4 men.

I was very happy to see the voters got the Cy Youngs correct for each league. Blake Snell in the AL and Jacob deGrom in the NL. I'm glad deGrom's win-loss record of 10 (the fewest ever by a Cy Young winner) didn't prevent him from taking home the hardware and he was far and away the best pitcher in every other category. I hope going forward they'll continue to rely less on a pitchers win-loss record.

MVP's will be named later on today. I'm predicting Mookie Betts and Chrisian Yelich to win.

Yankees get James Paxton in trade with Seattle. While I'm happy to get a talent like Paxton, I do have concerns with his ability to stay healthy as last year were the most innings he's ever thrown in a season at 160 1/3. Plus, they had to give up their top prospect Justus Sheffield and 2 other prospects. Personally, I would rather have used Sheffield in a trade with Cleveland to try to get Kluber.

The Timberwolves fire President and head coach Tom Thibodeau. I can't say I'm too surprised. I think the writing was on the wall when Thibodeau didn't want to trade Jimmy Butler but owner Glen Taylor proceeded anyway. Thibodeau leaves Minnesota with a 97-107 record. Rumors are former Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg may take over for Thibodeau.

I gotta say, I'm impressed with the season the Pacers have had up until this point. 2 years removed from trading Paul George, they're the third best team in the East and only 2 1/2 games behind Milwaukee and Toronto for the top spot. I did not expect this quick of a turnaround from them. Sucks about Oladipo though. That's gonna kill them.
