Ok, the title is a little sensational, but I wanted it that way.
History has been pretty clear that after the founding of the Commission, there were 26 families in the LCN. That includes the 5 families, Chicago Outfit, and everything else from San Jose to Buffalo. Rochester was not a family until the 70s. However, upon further reading we have
*Rockford. In the Chicago family's territory, yet many claim operated independently as its own family. It was called the Zammuto crime family and handled gambling and in the 70s, was involved in the narcotics trade.
*Springfield. Zito crime family. I can't think of a single member. Who were these guys?
*Madison Crime Family.
*Birmingham Crime Family. This was according to Bill Bonanno I think? Died out around the 60s.
*Newark Crime Family. Went defunct after an assassination plot against its leader by Profacis, territory was split up by the five families plus Decav and Philly.
*San Diego Crime Family. Went defunct after prohibition.
So I'm making two points. Were these first three every actually their own crime families? Were they satellites or were they offshoots of the Sicilian mob? So little is written in the history books about them, even compared to things like Dallas which never had much going on. We used to talk about these in the boards. Second, is it possible before the mob consolidated it was made up of 10 man nostras scattered across the country?
