Honestly I think Coppola wanted to show how the family was breaking apart. Kay leaves, Momma dies, Michael is about to kill Fredo, everything is falling apart.
Coppola shows the sharp contrast to the beginning of the story where the family is together before Vito is shot and the war (mob war) begins.
